EA Meetup With Talks

Dear friends of Effective Altruism,

We are excited to invite you to our next monthly meet-up!

Our guest will be Jennifer-Justine Kirsch, who has prepared a talk with the title "Why You Should Care About Fish Welfare". After the talk, Jennifer will be available to answer your questions. Later, we will transition to Icebreaker to first have discussions in small groups and also One on Ones. Fun questions about moral dilemmas surrounding fish welfare advocacy are included!

The description of the talk:

Fish are the most farmed vertebrate in the world. Annually, humans farm an estimated 73 to 180 billion individuals and catch between 0.8 and 2.3 trillion individuals from the wild. Both wild-caught and farmed fish suffer from standard industry practices that frequently disregard their welfare. Despite scientific consensus that fish feel pain, governments and industry do little to improve farming and capture methods to meet fishes' needs. It is out of this situation that two EA-aligned entrepreneurs founded Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI), a nonprofit to improve fishes' lives. In her presentation, Jennifer will explain why FWI focuses on fish, summarize the current state of the movement, and suggest the most impactful ways to help fish. We will then finish the presentation with some more profound, ethical questions around fish suffering.

We will leave out the introductory talk and dive directly into the main topic at 19:00. After the talk and Q&A, there will be an opportunity to have a discussion and socialise.

Wir freuen uns, euch zu unserem nächsten Meetup einzuladen, in dem es einen Vortrag geben wird, gefolgt von einer Möglichkeit, Fragen zu dem Thema zu stellen.

Unser Gast wird Jennifer-Justine Kirsch sein, mit dem Vortrag "Why You Should Care About Fish Welfare". Jennifer wird anschließend euren Fragen Rede und Antwort stehen.

Fische sind die am meisten gezüchteten Wirbeltiere der Welt. Jährlich züchten Menschen schätzungsweise 73 bis 180 Milliarden Individuen und fangen zwischen 0,8 und 2,3 Billionen Individuen aus der freien Natur. Trotz des wissenschaftlichen Konsenses, dass Fische Schmerzen empfinden, tun Regierungen und Industrie wenig, um die Zucht- und Fangmethoden zu verbessern und den Bedürfnissen der Fische gerecht zu werden. Aus dieser Situation heraus gründeten zwei EA-nahe Unternehmer die Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI), eine gemeinnützige Organisation zur Verbesserung des Lebens von Fischen. In ihrem Vortrag wird Jennifer erklären, warum FWI sich auf Fische konzentriert, den aktuellen Stand der Bewegung zusammenfassen und die wirkungsvollsten Wege aufzeigen, um Fischen zu helfen.

Wegen der derzeitigen Pandemie wird dieses Meetup online als Videokonferenz stattfinden. Wir werden den Einführungsvortrag auslassen und direkt mit dem des Abends um 19:00 anfangen.

Sollte man mit Effektivem Altruismus nicht vertraut sein, kann man als Einführung den Vortrag "Effektiver Altruismus: Wie können wir Herz und Verstand verbinden?" von Jan Dirk Capelle anschauen.

Nach dem Vortrag und dem Q&A wird es die Gelegenheit geben, sich mit anderen über Effektiven Altruismus und vieles mehr zu unterhalten.
