Love in a Capitalist Society: Between Idealization and Consumerism

In today’s world, love often seems shaped by the same logic that drives consumerism. Relationships can be treated like “fast food” sentiments: quick, easily replaceable, and focused on instant gratification rather than long-term effort. Dating apps sometimes resemble supermarkets, where people are “selected” and “discarded” based on quick impressions, high expectations, and minimal investment.

This event will explore how capitalism influences our ideas of love and relationships, why so many people experience toxic or unsatisfying dynamics, and how social media and online dating create unrealistic expectations that collapse in real life.

We’ll discuss the idealization of love, the difficulty of building healthy connections in a competitive, performance-driven society, and the lack of emotional education that leads many people to confusing, even abusive dynamics. Everyone is invited to reflect and bring their perspectives: how can we rethink love beyond consumerist logic?

IMPORTANT: I want everyone to express their opinions and participate at the conversation so I, as organizer, will moderate the group and I will intervene if the situation is getting chaotic, if some members have no chance to talk or if somebody will act rudely or take over the conversation. Everyone deserves the chance to talk and share their ideas, still respecting other people’s opinions, without ruining the harmony of the group.
