Interactive Narratives, Play, and Gamification

Project Dokree presents “A Ship is Coming”- an “Alternate Reality Game” designed to teach you how to have lucid dreams whilst you play.

(Lucid dreams are a special type of dream where you train yourself to recognise that you are dreaming in order to have total control over the experience).

Due to the pandemic the ARG had to go online and that meant it had to be redesigned. At the same time, Interactive Narratives and the meetup community as a whole was struggling due to the impact of lockdown.

Many small businesses and local creators started to find ways to work together in order to adapt to the changes and this was reflected in the redesign of our ARG. Instead of directing people to random locations around London in order to search for clues, we now direct people to search for clues via the online presence of local businesses and creators.

So for example, you solve a puzzle you find hidden in this Meetup group and it takes you to, say, a musician’s social media for his band where there is a new clue to find, which takes you the page of a local painter, and so on. Along the way you can stop off and enjoy the music or the paintings, perhaps deciding to make a purchase or two.

This ARG is free to play and can be played alone or as part of a group and it can be played according to your own pace.

Along the way there will be guides and clues to help you solve puzzles as you collect “Totems” and other objects, meet magical and mysterious characters and other hunters, as you are drawn into an immersive narrative like no other- because ultimately it takes you into your own mind and the final chapters of the story are experienced as part of a shared lucid dream experience.

The year is 800BC and you are on a journey to a mystical land called Nibbana.

This is no ordinary journey though because it starts on top of a giant turning wheel called Samsara and if you lose focus on your goal you will fall off the wheel.

If you fall off you will be placed in time out, in a kind of dream called Bardo- also known as Limbo. But before you know it, BOOM, you are reborn, you will respawn back onto the wheel of life and death called Samsara and start your journey once again.

This is Buddhism but not as you know it. Spirituality doesn’t have to be a dry affair, it can be fun, it can be playful and these may even turn out to be more realistic approaches that have to power to improve our society.

It’s recommended that you play this game whenever you are out walking by yourself and you are in the mood. Alternatively as little as 8 minutes meditation per day can suffice to start experiencing the benefits.
