POSTPONED: Data Streaming & Integration with Apache Kafka, MQTT, PLC4X

Details

PTalk #1: The rise of event streaming and Apache Kafka in IoT projects (Kai Wähner)

Business digitalization trends like microservices, the Internet of Things or Machine Learning are driving the need to process events at a whole new scale, speed and efficiency. Traditional solutions like ETL/data integration or messaging are not built to serve these needs.
Today, the open source project Apache Kafka is being used by thousands of companies including over 60% of the Fortune 100 to power and innovate their businesses by focusing their data strategies around event-driven architectures leveraging event streaming. We will discuss the market and technology changes that have given rise to Kafka and to Event Streaming, and we will introduce the audience to the key aspects of building an Event streaming platform with Kafka. Examples of productive use cases from the automotive, manufacturing and transportation sector will showcase the power of event streaming.

Talk #2: PLC4X – How to get data from industrial hardware into Kafka and MQTT systems (Christofer Dutz)

Everybody is talking about IIoT … all the great things that we can do with all the available (open-source) software we have. But when it comes to how to actually get the production data, people start to either go silent or refer to OPC-UA- or MQTT-enabled PLCs. Latest estimations show an availability of OPC-UA on something between 1,25% and 5%, MQTT probably being a little less, so what do we do with the other 95% without replacing all the existing hardware? Apache PLC4X aims exactly at this. Connectivity to industrial hardware, without the need to retrofit. In this talk I’ll focus on how we can easily get data from industrial hardware into Kafka and MQTT systems without any license costs and with a performance the commercial solutions are jealous about.

Talk #3: MQTT 5 intro: Features and use cases (Dominik Obermaier)

The MQTT protocol is the most popular Internet of Things protocol in the world today. Use cases range from connected cars, manufacturing systems, logistics, and industry 4.0 to enterprise chat applications, and mobile apps. Such widespread adoption has fueled high demand for further development of MQTT. MQTT 5 – the most extensive and feature-rich update to the protocol – seeks to meet that demand. This session covers everything about MQTT 5.0, the latest release of the lightweight IoT messaging protocol: What are the new features of MQTT 5 and why are they important for an IoT project? This session will also cover the use cases as well as the common pitfalls.

-- After the talks, Dominik and Kai will present a connected car demo using Kafka & HiveMQ. --
