Film of the month:
[?]* (Directed by George Roy Hill, 1969; 1h 50 m; FSK: ab 16)

A Western like no other, loosely based on the lives and adventures of the real Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, who were infamous outlaws on the run at the end of the 19th century. The sparkling rapport and repartee between actors Newman and Redford make for some rather charming desperados. This is the film that launched Robert Redford’s career, and he named the Sundance Film Festival after his role. Winner of four Academy Awards and nine BAFTA Awards. Starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Katharine Ross.

“It's light-hearted and likeable, a cool, 1960s spin on a genre that at the time had become a little tired.”
— Wendy Ide, The Times

“It's really more of a witty buddy movie in Western clothes—which probably explains the film's wide-ranging appeal.”
— Chuck O’Leary, Fulvue Drive-in

“Very funny in a strictly contemporary way—the last exuberant word on movies about the men of the mythic American West who have outlived their day.”
— Vincent Canby, New York Times

“A perfectly harmless and quite entertaining film.”
— Richard Schickel, LIFE
