Kubernetes & Cloud Native Aachen Meetup June 2024

Hello fellow Cloud Native and Kubernetes enthusiasts,

We're excited to introduce a new meetup driven by our collective passion for Cloud Native technologies and Kubernetes. As three enthusiasts, we have a common vision: to establish a recurring meetup where we can come together to share knowledge, expand our networks, and have discussions centered on everything Cloud Native and Kubernetes.

For our first meetup, we have an exciting agenda planned, with two insightful talks from our organizers and opportunities for networking over drinks and food. Here's what you can expect:

Agenda

18:30-19:00: Open doors

19:00-19:15: Welcome words from the organizers and thank you to our sponsor CANCOM

19:15-19:45: Sebastian Rabenhorst - "Planet scale monitoring: Handling billions of active series with Prometheus and Thanos"

Deploying and operating a highly available and distributed Prometheus setup at scale can present significant challenges. In this presentation, Sebastian will showcase an example of a globally distributed and highly scalable deployment at Shopify. This setup enables the ingestion of billions of active time series with tens of millions of samples per second, coming from thousands of applications running in hundreds of Kubernetes clusters.

Sebastian is a Senior Infrastructure Engineer at Shopify with a focus on Observability.

19:45-20:15: Networking over drinks and food

20:15-20:45: Marvin Beckers - "Building a Platform Engineering API Layer with kcp"

Self-service is a central aspect of platform engineering, and platform engineering teams frequently build on top of Kubernetes to utilize its amazing API design. The kcp project has been accepted into the CNCF Sandbox in 2023 and extends Kubernetes API concepts beyond container orchestration. This talk will discuss how kcp supercharges platform engineering with a global control plane for all internal services.

Marvin is a Team Lead at Kubermatic and a maintainer for kcp.
