Patriotism
[ NOTE: You can sign up at any time ]
...... is the feeling of love, devotion, and a sense of attachment to one's country or state.
This usually includes various levels of positive feelings towards the language, ethnicity, culture, politics and history of one’s “home” country.
Events like the Olympics are often watched and cheered by patriots who take pride in the medals won by their fellow countrymen.
Nowadays this can be inter-mingled with Nationalism which has acquired more negative connotations – and which often manifests itself as dislike or hatred of “the other”.
One often sees crowds waving flags and shouting anti-foreigner slogans. Racism is also sometimes manifested and many previously peaceful, patriotic societies are moving to the right and a key part of their manifesto is an anti-immigrant stance.
Let’s discuss to what extent we are patriotic.
Do we know any (or are we ourselves) nationalists?
As usual, feel free to arrive from 19:00 onwards; the discussion begins at 19:30
How is the huge increase in migration affecting such matters?
