Building a modern data platform with AWS and open-source solutions

Too big for Aurora - too small for Glue, sums up the situation we found ourselves in early last year. We, dx.one are the data processor for the Volkswagen, Audi and VW Commercial Vehicles dealers in central Europe. Tasked with re-building the Volkswagen Retail Cloud Analytics Platform, we set out to build a modern data platform leveraging both AWS core data services and some awesome (commercial) open-source solutions. I'll give an overview of the technical, organizational and legal challenges we encountered and overcame along the way.
