+++ Our tour has been postponed by 1 week from the institutes side because of the public transport strike and now will take place on March 9th 2023, please see the detailed updates below +++

Hello everyone,

We have an extraordinary event coming up. On March 9, 2023 starting shortly after noon at 12:30 pm, we will get an exclusive 2h guided tour through the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching. At IPP, research is being conducted on nuclear fusion, one of the most promising energy sources of the future.

Nuclear fusion should not be confused with nuclear fission, the energy source that has been in use for decades and that Germany is about to shut down in 2023.

Event Details

Our tour starts with a 45 minute introduction to the basics of nuclear fusion research. Afterwards, we will see the large fusion experiment 'ASDEX Upgrade' and how the experiments are powered by special surge generators. Finally, we will go to the visitor center with exhibits on fusion research.

++ IMPORTANT NOTES ++

- The number of participants is limited. Please only RSVP in case you really intend to join. If your situation changes, please update your RSVP so others from the (potential) waiting list can move up
- You have to be at least 15 years old to join
- Please be at the meeting point in time at 12:30
- The tour is free of cost
- The tour is unfortunately not barrier-free

Meeting Point

The IPP is located on the Garching Research Campus. Our meeting point at 12:30pm will be the southern exit of the subway station "Garching Forschungszentrum" (outside, just where the escalator reaches the top), coordinates: 48.263858, 11.671096.

Please be in time, we will be picked up at 12:45pm and then go through the main gate all together.

Looking forward to see you guys there!

+++ Updates regarding the public transportation strike on Thursday (March 2nd, 2023) +++

March 1st 2023, 11:07am: The tour manager from the Max Planck Institute just called me and said we need to postpone our tour by one week. So our new tour date will be on Thursday, March 9th 2023. Besides the main tour guide, there are other people involved at the institute to manage this tour and most of them will have problems to reach Garching Forschungszentrum tomorrow because of the public transportation strike. I am very sorry for this and hope all of you can manage to participate next week. A big thanks again to those who offered their car for car pooling, but it won't be needed anymore. Hope to see all of you next week! :)

March 1st 2023, 10:35am: Since there very likely will be no U-Bahn service on Thursday, we manage to form carpools for those of you who need a ride to Garching Forschungszentrum. We already have 3 people offering their car. If you need a ride, please write me a direct message here on Meetup, so I can connect you with the drivers. If you have a car and also want to offer to drive, please also write me. We likely will pick the S-Bahn station Ismaning as the place to match drivers and riders, since the S-Bahn is in service and Ismaning is not far from Garching Forschungszentrum. A good time to meet there would be 12:00, so that we will be at our main meeting point in Garching Forschungszentrum in time. Please follow these updates here in the next hours and also check your emails for group mails. Thanks :)
