What to expect
The Alta Via Uno is one of Italy's most popular trekking routes and the easiest high-altitude trail in the Dolomites. It begins at the iconic Braies Lake, meanders through the historically rich Lagazoui region, and ends at the striking cliffs of Cinque Torri. While the trail can be busy during the summer months, the breathtaking landscapes more than make up for the crowds. When I first experienced it, I was completely awe-struck. To offer a more tranquil experience, I've customized the route, adding detours to quieter paths and huts away from the main trail. After the trek, you can unwind with an extra day in the charming town of Brunico, soaking in the Italian atmosphere of "La Dolce Vita" or relaxing at the hotel’s spa (at additional cost).

Travel
We meet at the hotel in Brunico, Italy. It is possible and recommended to travel to Brunico via train. The hotel and meeting point in Brunico is in walking distance from the main train station. If you have to fly to Italy, the nearest airports are located in Innsbruck (2.5 hrs) or Verona (3 hrs). The train system across the alpine region is not always easy to understand and I more than happy to assist with booking tickets. Please get in touch!

Accommodation
In Brunico we stay in double or twin rooms with bathroom in a nice 4-star hotel, which has a beautiful spa and welnnes area. It is also within walking distance from the main station. The huts on the trek are a mix of simple and luxurious mountain huts, where we stay in a mix of shared rooms and dormitories that we may share with other hikers. All huts have shared washing facilities and offer showers (some at additional cost). The huts serve buffet-style continental breakfast, and dinner is either set in the hlf-board option or you can choose it from their menu. Vegetarian diet is well supported on the huts’ menus and some huts offer one or two vegan dishes by now. The huts aim to cater for dietary restrictions; however it is not always possible given their simple facilities and remoteness of their location. If you have any dietary requirements, please let me know in advance.
Programme
Day 1 - Arrival
We meet at the hotel in Brunico, where we'll also spend our last night, so extra luggage can be stored at the hotel during the tour. There is pre-tour briefing and discussion of the packing list in the late afternoon and a joined dinner in the city centre in the evening.
Day 2 – Rifugio Sennes (2126 m)
9 km, ↑900 m, ↓200 m, 4 hrs walking time (not including breaks)
We start by a beautiful lake, Lago di Braies, which is famous for its turquois colours, slowly ascending through a tranquil valley off the beaten path with impressive rock walls to the left and right until we reach the Riciogon pass (2331 m), where we enjoy our packed lunch. From here we descend over green meadows covered in Edelweiß, the most famous symbol of the Alpine region and highly distinct by now, to our hut for the night.
Day 3 – Rifugio Fanes (2060 m)
10 km, ↑ 550 m, ↓ 650 m, 4 hrs
The day starts easy on a wide gravel path downhill to Rifugio Pederü. From here the road continues uphill until we can switch onto a hiking path next to the road. At the end we reach the high plateau of the Gran Fanes with our refuge lying at a little lake inviting for a swim in the afternoon.
Day 4 - Ütia Scotoni (1985 m)
10 km, ↑ 550 m, ↓ 600 m, 4 hrs
We begin with a short ascent to lake Limo and continue on the wide gravel path through the high valley of Gran Pian with impressive mountain landscape on both sides of the path. Towards the end of the valley a narrow hiking path turns to the south-east and the uphill section of the day starts. We hike up over rocky terrain to the pass of Piz dl Lech (2486 m). From here an impressive view opens towards the Southern Dolomites. It’s a short but very steep descent to lake de Lagacio where we can hang out for the afternoon as it’s only a short walk from here to our final refuge.
Day 5 – Rifugio Giussani (2580 m)
10 km, ↑ 1100 m, ↓ 500 m, 5.5 hrs
Today is a long day starting with a steady uphill on a wide gravel path to Rifugio Lagazuoi, where we have lunch and spend some time to explore the historical base during WWII by walking through the military tunnels that still exist to date. From here we divert from the original route and continue on a narrow hiking path below the impressive peaks of Tofana de Rozes. With a final hour of ascent we reach our refuge of the night.
Day 6 – Descent
12 km, ↑200 m, ↓1300 m, 4.5 hrs
Our descent leads us through the valley of Travenanzes steadily downhill along a river, which is great for a cooldown during lunch. At the end of the valley we hit a small mountain road that eventually leads to a bus stop in Podestagno. From here we take a bus back to Brunico.
Day 7 - Departure
We finish our hiking week over dinner the night before. Everybody can meet up for breakfast in the hotel and you can start your travel home at any time today.
Note that the route may change due to weather and path conditions or the physical ability of the group.

My name is Johanna, and I am a qualified UIMLA mountain leader, and a qualified yoga teacher (RYT 500) based in Munich. I founded Shanti Treks in 2023 to create a hiking experience that brings together what I am passionate about. First, I love being in the mountains and experiencing new routes off the beaten tracks. Second, it is about connecting the body and mind with the nature around me and observing it with all my senses. And third, it is about bringing like-minded people together and forming new bonds.
I run dayhikes on weekends near Munich, as well as multi-day hiking weekends, multi-day trekking weeks & multi-day hiking and yoga retreats in the German, Austrian and Italian Alps. I also offer tours in Nepal in NOvember and April every year.
Note that I will be taking photos and short videos during the hike, which may be used on the homepage and on the social media accounts of Shanti Treks. By signing up to the hike it is assumed that there is consent for the photos and videos to be published.
