AI, Governance, & Socio-Technical Creativity

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping our lives, but how can we shape AI? In this talk, the researcher Christian Djeffal will examine uses of AI in public policy. Christian’s work asks how normativity can open up creative spaces that enable us to use technologies in very different ways. He will look at present and future struggles over AI, with a focus on how the technology might be employed in public administration. The discussion will examine current methods for dealing with AI from the perspectives of ethics, human rights, sustainable development, and regulation. Attendees will also be asked to think about how AI might shape governance of the future.

To kick off the evening there will be a short presentation by Nushin Yazdani exploring the ethical implications of artificial intelligence.

Dr. Christian Djeffal is an associated researcher at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), and a visiting researcher at the University of Zurich. In July, he will become Assistant Professor for Law, Science, and Technology at Technische Universität München. He works on law and digitization with a specific focus on artificial intelligence and the internet of things. His work covers many aspects of law and technology, including constitutional aspects, regulations, and standards. He is a member of the National E-Government Competence Center (NEGZ) and leads the “Open AI” with the Open Government Network Germany, advocating for transparent and comprehensible AI-applications in public administration. Together with the Berlin Administrative Academy, he trains executive level public servants in socio-technical creativity.

Nushin Isabelle Yazdani is a UX and transformation designer, artist, and AI ethics researcher. She seeks to create meaningful services centered on human interaction, and explores ways in which technology impacts and shapes society. She excels at finding patterns in human behavior and data, and is interested in social justice, empathy, awareness, and activism. Currently, she works at the Education Innovation Lab and freelances for companies like IDEO, Technologiestiftung, re:publica, and Retune.
