Interested in thrillers with a touch of Black Mirror, AI ethics, and morally ambiguous decisions? Then join us to discuss current technologist and author, former computer scientist and philosopher Anat Deracine's latest novel, Algorithms of Betrayal. In this satirical, fast-paced thriller, we meet disgruntled 40-something Ryan Archaki who has been unceremoniously fired from the AI start-up he helped build. Worse yet, his dismissal might have been plotted by his ex and her new lover, and Ryan discovers that the core product will be used by an unscrupulous company. For revenge to succeed, he must team up with a ragtag band of characters all left behind in the AI revolution. Will Ryan eventually pull off his revenge to hack into the model and render it useless before being caught by his ex, her boyfriend, and possibly even the FBI? Let's discuss the implications and limitations of AI against the messiness of humans in Algorithms of Betrayal.
After the discussion, we'll get to talk via videochat with author Anat Deracine! Bring your questions about this novel, AI ethics and possibilities, tech industry/startups, writing, and more!
About Anat Deracine:
As Francesco Petrarca, one of the three crowns of medieval Italian literature once wrote, "incola cev nusquam, sic sum peregrinus ubique". "I am a resident of nowhere, so therefore I am a wanderer of everywhere." This not only sums up Anat Deracine's personal life, having grown up in as diverse places as India and Saudi Arabia, later moving to Canada, the US, and the UK, but also sums up her range of published works. Some of Anat's books include:
- Driving by Starlight, a YA coming of age novel about a Saudi Arabian girl trying to find a place for herself. It was published by an imprint of MacMillan Press and starred by the Kirkus Review and Publisher's Weekly
- The Divine Comedy of the Tech Sisterhood, a collection of satirical essays recounting a woman's uphill and sometimes absurd struggle of building a senior-level career in tech
- Her Golden Coast, a sapphic queer romance between two young women navigating the confines of class and privilege within the insular San Francisco tech scene
- The Nightwolves, a webcomic about the dangers of surveillance technology.
