Sunday Skate - Out & Back to Takoma Park on the MBT!
🛼 Sunday Social: The "Grand Branch" Trek
Get ready for an epic 15.7-mile out-and-back journey from the heart of DC to the northern edge of the District. We are so fortunate to have the incredible Talida leading the pack for this high-energy trek!
This is a special one—we’ll be rolling through the freshly opened MBT extension from Fort Totten to Takoma, completing the full trail connection.
📍 Meetup & Rollout
• Location: Freedom Plaza (1301 Pennsylvania Ave NW)
• Meetup: 11:00 AM
• Wheels Up: 11:10 AM Sharp! 🚀
🗺️ The Route
Under Talida’s expert guidance, we’ll move from Freedom Plaza toward the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT). We are skating the full length of the trail all the way into Takoma.
⚡ The Vibe: Flow & Flex
• The Pace: We’re keeping a steady, intermediate-friendly flow.
• The Turnaround: Once we reach the Takoma terminus, Talida will call the play—we may stay for a quick break to soak in the vibes, or we might keep the wheels spinning and head straight back to the Plaza.
• The "Red Line" Backup: If you need to tap out early, the route mirrors the Metro Red Line. You can easily hop on at Takoma, Fort Totten, or Brookland.

🛡️ Safety & Gear
• HELMETS ARE MANDATORY: Let's keep the community safe!
• Pads: Highly recommended (especially wrist guards for those urban trail cracks).
• Hydration: 15.7 miles is a solid workout—please bring plenty of water!
• Etiquette: Follow Talida’s lead, stay to the right on the trail, and always call out your passes.

Discover the DC Boundary Stones in Virginia – Next 7 Stones
Did you know Alexandria and Arlington were once part of the District of Columbia? Join us for the second hike along a portion of the former boundary line between the nation’s capital and Virginia. Discover why this area was included in the Federal City and why it was retroceded to Virginia in 1846. See stones placed every mile along the boundary survey line in 1791; all on this hike are original stones, though 2 are only visible from a distance as they are in private backyards and a third one cannot be seen from the street (but we will show you the location). These stones are the first federal monuments in the nation’s capital. This urban hike will be mostly along sidewalks; total distance is approx. 9.5 miles with about 670 feet of total elevation gain.
We’ll meet at Southwest #7 Boundary Stone in the parking lot of Carlin Springs Elementary School, 5995 5th Road S, Arlington, VA 22204 by 9:30 AM. We’ll do a car shuttle to place most vehicles at the end point of the hike. Then we’ll hike to the Bluemont Park public restrooms and continue along the southwest line to the West cornerstone. From there, we’ll hike along the northwest line to the Northwest #3 Boundary Stone. At the end of the hike, we’ll consume our bag lunches in a park with a porta-john. Bring water, lunch or snacks, and dress for the weather. Sun protection (such as hat & sunglasses) is recommended if the weather is sunny or partly sunny. Restroom opportunities along the route are limited. All participants must sign a liability waiver at the start. SCPRO requests a voluntary donation of $2 per person to help support our all-volunteer program. Leaders are Russ Norfleet & Gary Kosciusko.
Root (6pm)
*Root* is a game of woodland might and right. Stalk the woods as one of the Vagabonds, seize the initiative with the Eyrie birds of prey, rule over your subjects as the Marquise de Cat, or command the Woodland Alliance to create a new order. With creatures and cunning, you'll rule a fantastic forest kingdom in the ultimate asymmetric board game of adventure and war.

Why I Believe This: Beginning 2026 with an Honest Conversation
**Start the new year with a Braver Angels gathering focused on speaking openly and listening deeply.**
**In small, structured groups, each person will have five minutes to share a political or social issue that matters to them and why- no debate, no interruption, just genuine curiosity.**
**Participants will practice curiosity, reflecting back values and emotions they hear, asking thoughtful questions, and- only with permission- offering their perspective.**
**It’s a simple and powerful way to connect with one another and begin the year with a respectful and courageous conversation.**
**Date: Saturday, January 10, 2026**
**Time: 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm**
**Place: Columbus Metropolitan Library, Southeast Branch, 3980 Hamilton Rd, Groveport, Ohio**
**All are welcome- bring a friend!**
