Reading in Companionable SILENCE
Reading in Companionable SILENCE
Who is in the mood for some quiet togetherness while catching up on their reading? Let’s enjoy literature or non-fiction together and come to our Reading in Companionable Silence meeting on Friday (since it is a public holiday). Nathania will welcome members and there is time to socialize and to order some food or a beverage - ca. 30 min. Then we read for an hour in silence. After that - time to exchange impressions, suggestions, ask questions and generally have a good time. There might be a break in the middle in order to allow for more drinks, a bathroom break etc.

## **Überall kleine Farbtupfer- der Frühling begrüßt uns.** ***Little splashes of colour everywhere – spring is here.*** Wir sitzen wieder draußen. Alles fühlt sich luftiger an. **Was machen wir an Ostern?** *What shall we do at Easter?* Vielleicht habt Ihr Lust die Aufbruchstimmung, die in der Lust liegt, aufs Papier zu bringen. *Perhaps you’d like to capture that sense of new beginnings, which lies in the joy of creation, on paper.* Da bei mir nicht gegenständlich gemalt wird, fällt es super leicht zu starten und sich den Farben und dir anzuvertrauen. *As we don’t paint from life, it’s intuitive painting and incredibly easy to get started* ! **Ostern ist ein schöner Moment,** das auszuprobieren. Mein Atelier ist offen. ***Easter is a lovely time*** *to give it a go. My studio is open.*

I started our writing club back in May 2025, hosted weekly at the Heinrich Schulz Library (thanks to them, it’s free every Saturday!). With time we have grown and now we also meet on every second Tuesday and Sunday at the cafe. Over time, I’ve been lucky to meet some of the most creative and kind minds in Berlin. Happy to host our second Open Mic and see what all of you have prepared. This event is an invitation to celebrate your words and the magic that happens when we speak them out loud together. Looking forward to meeting you all — and hearing your voices. PS Happy Birthday!

Shut-Up & Write Zehlendorf meets Fridays, except during school holidays, following the standard format of 15 minutes to say hello, followed by two 45 minute writing sessions and a break in between. The location is a cozy coworking space, which means it's quite peaceful, with no music playing or customers chatting around us. Coffee and tea are available in the kitchen, so there's no pressure to purchase anything (though donations are welcome!). So come and join us for some quiet work in a quiet space. When you arrive, if the door is closed, just text or ring The Space Coworking: 0178 869 0222.

Reading Shakespeare Socratically (The Merchant of Venice Acts 3, 4, & 5)
Reading Shakespeare Socratically (The Merchant of Venice Acts 3, 4, & 5)
New members are always welcome. It's ok to have missed any or all of the sessions involving other plays. Current Reading: **The Merchant of Venice Acts 3, 4, & 5** Completed Plays: Julius Caesar, The Winter's Tale GUIDELINES: ***Participants should complete the reading before each session. It's no problem not to have understood everything, but without some familiarity with the text prior to meeting it will be difficult to have a conversation.*** ***Also, it's not necessary that English be your first language in order to join, but your command and understanding of English should be that you're able to participate confidently in discussions about ideas, feelings, and abstract things.*** **"Reading Shakespeare Socratically?"** \-\- This means we'll put questions to the text and try to make it speak\, as though it is a living person and we are its interlocutor\. We'll ask it questions about what the text has said and then try to find answers\. Mostly\, this just means having a discussion amongst ourselves but there are a few guidelines that\, in my experience\, have proven immensely helpful to having a substantial conversation: **#1** Avoid Outside Sources; interpretations you read on the internet about what the play really means, academic papers/lectures (unless they are your own), personal stories/anecdotes, biographically-driven analysis of the text, interpolations about Shakespeare's personality, facts about Shakespeare's life., etc. **#2** Try to ground what you say in the text -- it's not necessary to quote something every time you speak, but referencing passages, etc. will create great conversation. **#3** Be conscious of your own speaking time. If there are 10 people and 120 minutes of event time, then people have roughly 12 minutes each to speak. Nobody will keep track, but it' a good reference point to keep in mind. We also strive to practice [the principle of charity when considering another's point of view.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principle_of_charity) **My Role/About Me:** I will moderate the discussion and begin each session by asking an opening question that should serve as a point-of-entry into the text. I don't posit myself as an expert or authority. Nor do I claim to have the "right" answers, but I do have a lot of experience participating in such discussions and a solid background in reading Shakespeare. This is a free event.

Book Bedazzling (BYOB) - Bloodguard by Cecy Robson
Let's bedazzle some books while we discuss our April pick: Bloodguard by Cecy Robson! Book description: One hundred years. Tens of thousands of gladiators. And today, only one will rise… Everything in the Kingdom of Arrow is a lie. Leith of Grey thought coming to this new land and volunteering to fight in the gladiator arena—vicious, bloodthirsty tournaments where only the strongest survive—would earn him enough gold to save his dying sister. He thought there was nothing left to lose. He was wrong—and they took everything. His hope. His freedom. His very humanity. All Leith has left is his battle-scarred body, fueled by rage and hardened from years of fighting for the right to live another day. Then Leith meets Maeve, an elven royal who is everything he despises. Everything he should hate. Until the alluring princess offers him the one thing he needs most: a chance to win the coveted title of Bloodguard—and his freedom. But in a kingdom built on secrets and lies, hope doesn’t come cheap. Nor will his ultimate revenge… Event: Please bring your own book, journal, bookmarks, etc to bedazzle. If you have bedazzling supplies, please bring them as well. I will supply gems, glue, and picker tools, but if you have certain colors in mind, you may want to bring your own.
Bad Girls Book Club April 2026
Bad Girls Book Club April 2026
**Our April novel is: *The Hong Kong Widow* by Kristen Loesch** **This month’s novel blends gothic atmosphere with historical fiction and chilling horror, set against the haunting backdrop of China. The book is 368 pages in print and 10 hours and 42 minutes on audiobook.** In 1950s Hong Kong, Mei is a young refugee of the Chinese Communist revolution struggling to put her past in Shanghai behind her. When she receives a shocking invitation—to take part in a competition in one of the city's most notorious haunted houses, pitting six spirit mediums against one another in a series of six séances over six nights, until a single winner emerges—she has every reason to refuse. Except that the hostess, a former Shanghainese silent film star, is none other than the wife of the man who once destroyed Mei’s entire life. It is promised the winner will receive a fortune, but there is only one prize Mei wants: revenge. Decades later, the final night of that competition has become an infamous urban legend: The police were called to the scene of a brutal massacre but found no evidence, dismissing it as a collective hallucination. Mei knows what she saw, but now someone else is convinced they know what she did. She must uncover the truth about the last night she ever spent in that house—even if the ghosts of her past are waiting for her there. . . .
