“Building and distributing Linux images the modern way w/ Flatpak and OStree”, Joaquim Rocha

Abstract: For a long time, Linux distros have used package-based systems in order to distribute their core packages or applications, like Debian's apt-get. While we can all recognize the strengths of this model, there are a number of things that can surely be improved.

At Endless Technologies, they make use of ostree and Flatpak for distributing Endless OS and its apps. ostree provides a way for distributing filesystem trees, allowing read-only OS trees and atomic upgrades. Flatpak leverages ostree for distributing apps, while also running them in a sandbox, thus making it not only a very efficient and robust way to install applications, but also a secure way of running them.

In this presentation, Joaquim will introduce the ostree and Flatpak projects, as well as why and how this benefits companies that develop operating systems like Endless.

Abstract: Crafting a music instrument used to be a delicate art requiring thousands of hours of meticulous work. Not anymore! We will present Griode (https://github.com/jpetazzo/griode), an open source project that uses a generic scripting language to glue together some open source components, libraries, and sound samples, to create a custom instrument that even non-musicians can play.

SPEAKER BIO:

Joaquim Rocha, Software Engineer at Endless - Currently working at Endless, a start-up providing access to technology to the next billion users in regions with limited internet connectivity. For the past 10 years, Joaquim worked on projects of different sizes and technologies, mostly involving the GNU/Linux operating system and other important Open Source projects such as GNOME. Apart from coding, he also participates as a speaker in a number of important conferences related to Free Software, like FOSDEM or GUADEC.

Jérôme Petazzoni, Container and Linux audio enthusiast. - Jérôme was part of the team that built, scaled, and operated the dotCloud PAAS, before it became Docker. He worked seven years at the famous container company, wearing various hats. When he's not glued to a computer screen, he collects musical instruments. He can passably murder the theme of Zelda on a dozen of them.
