In the next meeting of the Cologne book club, we will be discussing Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Crime and Punishment is a feverish and morally searching novel that explores conscience, isolation, and the limits of the ideas we use to justify ourselves. Set in the crowded tenements and summer heat of St. Petersburg, it follows a destitute former student whose theories about extraordinary men collide with the ordinary human world around him. Dostoevsky moves restlessly between poverty, family duty, faith, and the pull of confession, keeping the reader close to a mind under enormous pressure. The result is an intense psychological experience that reads with the momentum of a thriller while asking the questions of a philosophical treatise

Fyodor Dostoevsky is known for his uncanny access to divided minds, characters who argue with themselves as fiercely as they argue with each other and for a style that is urgent, digressive, and startlingly modern. At the end of each session, everyone attending gets the chance to recommend a book. Then, we take a vote, and the book with the most votes will be chosen. If you are attending the meet up, you will be able to decide on the next book.

We will meet at Kulturraum 405, a wonderful space that provides a cozy and inspiring environment for our book club gatherings. As a small community initiative, they kindly request a voluntary donation of approximately €3 per person to support their ongoing efforts in maintaining the location and ensuring consistent meet ups for us.

In the next meeting of the Cologne book club, we will be discussing Earthlings by Sayaka Murata.

Earthlings by Sayaka Murata is a strange and unflinching novel that explores alienation, conformity, and the quiet violence of being told how to live. Its narrator is a young woman who has never felt at home among the people around her, and who holds onto a private mythology to survive a world that expects her to work, marry, and reproduce on schedule. Murata writes the pressures of family and society in a deadpan register that makes the ordinary look increasingly alien, and lets the reader feel how much strain sits beneath politeness. It is a disquieting, propulsive book that keeps unsettling its own ground beneath you.

Sayaka Murata is known for her flat, precise sentences and for characters who observe social rules from just outside them, reporting back on what they find absurd. Her writing invites readers to consider who gets counted as normal, what "fitting in" actually costs, and how much of what we call instinct is really instruction. Beneath the strangeness there is real sympathy for people who cannot or will not perform the life expected of them, and a bone-dry humor that keeps surfacing at the least comfortable moments.

Earthlings by Sayaka Murata is a provocative and genuinely disturbing novel that invites meaningful discussion about family, autonomy, and the machinery of social expectation. It goes to dark places and does not soften them, which makes it a rich but demanding pick and an excellent choice for readers who want fiction that argues, disturbs, and refuses easy resolution, and who are willing to sit with discomfort for the sake of a real conversation.
