Workshop on "Data Wrangling with R" by Kyla McConnell (University of Freiburg, R Ladies Freiburg)

Join us for a data wrangling workshop with examples from linguistic data! In this workshop, we’ll learn to use R-Markdown scripts and the tidyverse for quick, easy, and reproducible data “wrangling”. That is, we’ll practice commands for getting your data into the shape it needs to be for later analysis and graphing.

Specifically, the workshop will showcase the dplyr package, and its functions for easily renaming columns, taking subsets of a dataframe, filtering based on logical conditions, changing column labels, and even advanced pivoting datasets.

All this will be shown on linguistic data types like self-paced reading, corpus frequency data, surveys, acceptability judgements and more.
No previous knowledge is assumed, but please ensure that you have R and R-Studio installed on your computer. Join us in person or on Zoom for this hybrid event!

Kyla McConnell is a psycholinguist currently finishing up her Ph.D. at the University of Freiburg in Freiburg, Germany. In her dissertation, she models individual differences in probabilistic language processing, using R and Julia to model self-paced reading times. She is a co-organizer of R-Ladies Freiburg as well as a local R-stats group for linguists.

If you’re interested in more workshops by Kyla and her colleague and friend Julia Müller, R-Ladies Freiburg hosts monthly workshops on a variety of R-related topics, all online and free to join: https://www.meetup.com/rladies-freiburg/.
