Interview with Boguslaw Cyganek: Everything About Tensors

Meeting C++ is hosting an interview with Antoine Morrier! He will be giving the talk Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Tensors* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) at Meeting C++ 2026!

Talk description:
In the context of AI, we increasingly hear the term "tensor." Yet many developers still perceive tensors as mysterious mathematical objects hidden behind Python APIs and GPU frameworks.
This talk demystifies tensors from a practical C++ programmer’s perspective. We'll explore what tensors really are and, with simple math and graphics, introduce basic concepts like indexing, order, rank, decomposition, and matricization. We'll show how to represent tensors using multidimensional data structures and how they can be efficiently represented in modern C++. We'll examine the Boost, Eigen, Blaze, xtensor, and Kokkos libraries, with a particular focus on `std::mdspan`, as well as the upcoming `std::mdarray` and `std::linalg`, and in the context of efficient tensor processing on CPUs and GPUs.

Boguslaw Cyganek is a researcher and lecturer at the Department of Electronics, AGH University of Krakow in Poland. He has worked as a software engineer for a number of companies such as Nisus Writer USA, Compression Techniques USA, Manta Corp. USA, Visual Atoms UK, Wroclaw University in Poland, and Diagnostyka Inc. Poland. His research interests include computer vision and AI, as well as the development of embedded systems. His teaching interests include computer vision, AI, operating systems and software development in C++. His classes on C++ programming were attended by hundreds of students, some of them currently working as software engineers in various worldwide companies. He has published two hundred scientific papers, and he has been a presenter at many conferences. Prof. Boguslaw Cyganek is also the author of “Object Detection and Recognition in Digital Images: Theory and Practice” published by Wiley in 2013, as well as “Introduction to Programming with C++ for Engineers”, published by Wiley in 2021. Boguslaw was a speaker to many C++ conferfences, such as Meeting C++ in Germany and C++ on Sea in UK.
