Exploring Negative Space together 🎨✨
Details
Join us for a cosy drawing gathering exploring the art of what's not there! 😊
I just returned from Japan and rediscovered the concept of negative space: The powerful emptiness that shapes everything around it. In this meetup, we'll explore how space and "the missing" can create meaning in our art.
We'll meet in a relaxed café with coffee and cake to dive into this fascinating concept together!
Everyone is welcome! We are always a nice blend of some experienced artists and some complete beginners :)
Just be aware, that negative space is a bit of an advanced concept. If you are struggling with very basic drawing, this might be a bit challenging.
What we'll do:
1) Arrival & Visual Shift (15 min) We'll ease in with a mini-intro about how we perceive emptiness, using photo and artwork references to discover another point of view.
2) The Japanese Lens (20-30 min) Exploring negative space through photos from Japan and introducing key concepts:
- Ma (間): meaningful distance, timing, and "pause" that creates form and feeling
- Yohaku (余白): deliberately left space that carries something
3) Sketching Exercise (15 min) A quick negative space drawing exercise to understand the concept more deeply
4) Main Drawing Session (60 min) Reduction exercise: Learning to see and draw what surrounds the subject
5) Everyday Negative Space (30 min) Practicing the "three-composition formula" with everyday scenes
Please bring:
- A pencil or the medium you prefer
- Since we will draw in a café, please avoid messy mediums like oils, acrylics and charcoal
Please note: This is an event for just 8 people - please be fair to the others and only join if you can come! :)
RSVP opens on Thur, the 18th December at 7pm.
Art is a great way to meet new people while learning and improving in a community. I'm looking forward to drawing and meeting you!
