Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) is considered one of the best films of the last quarter century. A black and white slice of magic (post) realism, the film takes place in an unnamed, isolated village deep in the heart of Hungary; and explores the mood of the town, as it contemplates the arrival of a (potentially sinister) circus.
This will be my first Béla Tarr film; I’m pretty excited! The recently restored print is part of Lincoln Center’s Tarr retrospective ( https://www.filmlinc.org/series/farewell-to-bela-tarr/?tab=films)… other recommended films from the series are The Turin Horse and Sátántangó.
If interested please please please buy your tickets soon (will probably sell out), and please RSVP on our page if you are attending. Thanks! See you there! We will meet in the lobby beforehand (look for me with white hair and a Criterion shirt), and we will head somewhere nearby afterwards to discuss. -Bob.
