Software systems require robust authentication and authorization strategies to protect user data and keep APIs secure. Anyone who has worked with OAuth 2.0 is familiar with both its flexibility and the security pitfalls and complexity of the OAuth ecosystem.
This is where OAuth 2.1 comes in: an update that consolidates a decade of best practices and lessons learned from the OAuth 2.0 protocol. Although OAuth 2.1 is still in draft status, it is already being adopted in practice. For example, the MCP authorization specification is built around OAuth 2.1. In this talk, I'll will explore what changes with OAuth 2.1 and why these changes matter.
