Details

This time, Hamza Azziti from Peeriot will introduce us to Myrmic.

Myrmic is an open-source runtime designed for developers and teams building resilient systems across embedded devices, edge computers, gateways, servers, and distributed environments. Built in Rust and leveraging WebAssembly, Myrmic provides a runtime model that allows applications to run across different hosts while supporting communication, self-organization, and fault tolerance.

This demo explores how simple hardware can work together to create shared experiences, from customized programs and interactive games to collaborative experiments.

Hamza Azziti is a software engineer at Peeriot, with a focus on Rust and distributed systems.

18:00 – 18:10: Introduction and Welcome
18:10 – 19:00: Myrmic Demo and Q&A
19:00 – 19:15: Setup Checks
19:15 – 20:35: Hands-on Exercise
20:35 – 21:00: Results and Debrief
21:00 onwards: Pizza and Networking

We will provide the following:

- ESP32 boards for use during the session.
- Starter code, exercise instructions, and technical support.
- Wi-Fi router

SETUP REQUIREMENTS

Note: Linux is our supported platform.

- Your own Linux laptop, charger, USB-C cables, and a USB port; bring an adapter if needed.
- A notebook and pen (optional)
- An editor, Git and Rust/Cargo installed through rustup. - Complete the event setup guide before arrival, including the Myrmic CLI, embedded build tools and a build check. Rust/Cargo alone is not enough.
- Permission to install tools and access USB devices. Check work-laptop restrictions in advance.
- No AI coding tools. Please don't use AI assistants or agents (e.g. Codex, Copilot, or Claude Code) to complete the workshop exercises. The goal is to work through the challenges yourself.

SETUP GUIDE

1. To start building, you must install Myrmic CLI on Linux. Please see the step-by-step guide via this link: https://book.myrmic.dev/docs/quickstart/installation/

2. Next, you must install what you need to work with ESP32 boards – building and flashing Myrmic firmware, and compiling your own cells for the board. You may read the step-by-step guide here: https://book.myrmic.dev/docs/quickstart/installation-embedded/
