Astrobiology | From Planetary Formation to the Origin of Life

the worldwide 2023 Pint of Science Festival is just around the corner, and of course we'll join some of their exciting events that take place in Munich.

First Talk: "The (unofficial) Cookbook to bake a Planetary System"
Speaker: Claudia Toci (European Southern Observatory Fellow in Garching)

As of today, astronomers detected more than 5000 planets orbiting around stars that are not our own Sun. We detected rocky planets like or bigger than our Earth, gaseous giants more massive than Jupiter or smaller versions of Neptune, all together forming planetary architectures very different from our own Solar System. How did those planetary systems form? From the ground, modern telescopes are capable to take "pictures" of the disc composed by dust and gas that is surrounding young star in formation. Hidden inside their parental disc, young protoplanets are forming and growing.

Second Talk: "The Trail to the Origins of Life"
Speaker: Eleonora Bianchi (ORIGINS Vera Rubin Fellow)

Why is there life on Earth? Terrestrial life is based on relatively small molecules containing carbon atoms. In the talk I will tell you where and how organic molecules are formed in space and how they may have fertilised the young Earth with seeds of life.

We will meet at 18:30 at Keg Bar entrance (Trautenwolfstraße 1 80802, München), and then go inside together at 18:45 to find seats. The talk will start at 19:00.
