What does it mean to be “maladjusted” in a world that may sometimes feel out of alignement with our core values?

In this facilitated conversation, we’ll explore Creative Maladjustment as a thought-provoking lens for reflection and critical thinking; a concept playfully introduced by Martin Luther King Jr. in one of his speeches.

This concept may initially feel distant to some of us, as it is strongly shaped by the historical, cultural and religious context of MLK, who was a Baptist minister in 1960s USA. However, when we tune into the underlying message, it opens onto universal notions that transcend time and space; such as Hope, Love, Art, Integrity and Justice.

To the speech (quote starts at approx. min. 42): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t2vD1skiz80&list=LL&index=5&pp=iAQBsAgC

What to expect:

  • We’ll discuss a segment of MLK’s speech where he introduces this concept. Feel free to read the quote or listen to the speech before joining.
  • Rather than analyzing the speech line by line, we’ll focus on discussing its relevance today: psychologically, ethically, personally and any other dimensions that may come up.
  • I’ll be facilitating the conversation, encouraging a systemic view and regularly building bridges to our own subjective experience. We’ll be straying across levels of abstraction, basically. 😉 Not to get lost or scattered, but to bring texture and coherence to our discussion.

🚫 What this space is not:

  • A debate club in the traditional sense: we will be moving between abstraction and personal shares. Please be discerning about what you choose to argue about.
  • Group therapy: as much as personal shares are welcome, please be aware that I am not a trained therapist.
  • An extractive space: this is about mutual generosity; come ready to give, not just take from this space.

To keep this emerging space alive, a small donation (if and as you’re able) is much appreciated and helps cover Meetup subscription costs.

Looking forward to discussing with you! ☺️
