Think & Drink: Philosophical Debates
Details
It's getting darker, but the mind shines bright.
Join us for another evening of brainstorming and a thought-provoking discussion.
The topic will be : Is it okay to be selfish? 🤔
Here are some leading questions we could touch on :
Is there a difference between "self-interest" (acting to benefit oneself without harming others) and "selfishness" (acting to benefit oneself at the expense of others)?
Where would you put "individualistic" on that spectrum?
Where is the (moral) line drawn?
Is pure, non-harmful self-interest not only acceptable but necessary for human flourishing?
Some economic theories argue that a self-interest motivated society would lead to an optimal outcome . Do you agree or would it lead to chaos and social collapse?
At what point does an individual's right to pursue self-interest conflict with their obligation to the collective?
What affects a community's moral code or carring for others and self?
Phoebe Buffet Paradox - Is true, selfless altruism actually possible, or are all seemingly selfless acts ultimately rooted in some form of self-benefit (feeling good about helping, avoiding guilt, securing social praise, or adhering to a personal moral code)?
If the latter is true, does the motivation matter as long as the outcome is positive for others?
Extra mini topic - Is being a parent altruistic or selfish?
Looking forward to hearing your thought and questions ☺️
Feel free to get in touch with any questions.
