THE SENSATIONAL BLAIRGOWRIE, RYE and SORRENTO BACKBEACHES
Hosted by Island and Boats Adventures and Hikes
Details
Please note: I think this has become my favourite hike, other than Wilsons Promontory.
15 km approx, You will need to be an experienced hiker, or sit out some of the times we take long staircases down to the shore. (There will be a lot of staircases.)
Most of this day will be spent walking the beaches, clifftops and rock platforms between the Sorrento and Rye back beaches. This is a sensational, mostly hidden area that people know nothing about.
Here we will leave some of our cars (as this is where we will finish our day’s hiking.)
1 Rye
Meet at the car park of ‘Number 16’ at Rye back beach. You will find this if you take a left turn at the intersection of Brown’s Road and Marcia Avenue in Rye. Here we will explore the number 16 coast and mammoth cave and (from a distance) what I believe to be a Powerful Owl ‘nesting’ hole. And some secondary caves. This stop by itself is worth going out for the day.
2 Sorrento
We will then drive to Sorrento and park near the cemetery. Meeting at the cemetery, we will leave some of our cars there for collecting after we finish our hike. There are too many highlights to even begin to mention. For example: the hiking itself and the tracks, Coppins Lookout, Sorrento back beach, St Paul’s Lookout, and then the unknown Points and Bays and rock platforms and staircases all the way to our cars at ‘Number Sixteen).
3 St Paul’s Beach to Koonya Ocean Beach. This is a detour that we do part of the way to ‘Number Sixteen’ via a long detour to the other side of the bay. This gives us a chance to explore and enjoy the best of the Sorrento bay area. Basically we travel along a nature trail (Tuckey’s Track) from St Pauls Lookout to Sullivan Bay, then return along Hughes Road (pavement walking) to Koonya Ocean Beach.
For me, this is all about big caves and platforms and dangerous waves to admire. (No swimming on this trip.) And much exploring.
We must all be careful and sensible near the coast and cliff edges.
Perhaps we will share a meal afterwards.
