FRENCH ISLAND Low-Tide bay walk and more
Hosted by Island and Boats Adventures and Hikes
Details
This is a very unusual hike at low tide. Low tide on French Island is magnificent. It creates massive sandbanks that stretch out kilometres from shore. THERE ARE NO WORDS THAT GIVE JUSTICE TO HOW SPECIAL THIS WILL BE AT LOW TIDE.
About 15 km easy hiking.
COST: $25 cash payable on the day (no coins). (This will include mini-bus hire.) And you will also have to pay the ferry fares – see below.
THE PLAN
Meet at Stony Point Ferry Terminal by 9.55. This is a small building on the pier, but very close to the road.
This means parked and meeting me at this time. We will not be able to wait, so you might want to get there early.
Stage One: We will walk along a variety of tracks to Chiltern Rocks. You will probably get your feet wet, and carry some appropriate footwear for walking on the rocks. Here we walk out in shallow water to get a perspective of looking at the island from the perspective of the sea. We will be met here by the island minibus (12 seater) to be taken to the islands General Store/Kiosk. You may eat your own food, or buy food there for lunch. It is a lovely environment and you might want to sit there for hours.
Stage Two: Dropped off by bus at Chiltern Rocks to continue along the coast for awhile before turning back. One way will be mostly on the beach, the return trip will be more on forested trails, and even the road.
Low tide 11.46 pm. This is the key factor for this day's adventure, which will be one you will never forget. It will be exhilarating, phenomenal, photographic.
For those who are keen, we can book a meal at the Hastings Hotel for dinner afterwards. (It was good food and space last time.)
FEES: We are paying our own fares. It is best to do this online before the day as there is a chance of no tickets being available on the day. ASK FOR A TICKET on the 10.15 to FRENCH ISLAND, RETURNING AT 6.00 pm.
Return prices are $31, or $19 (pension or concession) or $0 for seniors with a Seniors Card with them.
Please NOTE: Public toilets will be available conveniently except from 2.30 to 5.30. (Much forest is available.)
I can be contacted on 0417 162 146.
PLEASE NOTE: I HAVE JUST RESTARTED MY OLD GROUP FOR SUMMER ACTIVITIES NOW THAT IT IS MORE FEASIBLE TO DO. MY 2 GROUPS ARE HIKING WITH FRIENDS AND ISLAND AND BOAT HIKES AND ADVENTURES. HIKES POSTED IN ONE GROUP ARE LIKELY TO BE POSTED IN THE OTHER. MEMBERS OF HIKES IN ‘THE OTHER GROUP’ WILL BE NOTED AS MY PLUS ONES IN THIS GROUP.
