Henry Cowell Observation Deck Loop
Details
The Henry Cowell Observation Deck Loop is a scenic, moderately challenging trail of about 5.2 miles (roughly 5 to 5.3 mi) near Felton in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. While the hike is doable by many, it requires negotiating both paved road stretches and steeper single-track segments, and cumulative elevation gain is around 600–700 ft.
The route takes you through multiple habitats: you’ll first wander amid redwood groves, cross sections of the rare Santa Cruz Sandhills ecosystem, and eventually climb toward the Observation Deck, which sits at about 805 ft — the highest vantage in the park.
From that perch, you get sweeping views of Monterey Bay, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and surrounding ridgelines. The descent typically follows Ridge Fire Road back toward the forest and reconnects via Pipeline Road and other trails — you’ll close the loop through redwood forest and enjoy a varied, rewarding walk
