ABSTRACT:
At Fisheries Queensland, our aim is to provide useful population models that inform harvest control rules promoting sustainability. The population models are guided by fishery-dependent data such as catch-per-day, and fishery-independent data such as biomass surveys and age-length measurements. The population models are often non-linear with highly correlated parameters. Constructing models that capture biological processes, are resilient to poor data, and reveal the true uncertainty of estimates is extremely important. I hope to demonstrate the statistical challenges we face and present our best attempts at solutions.

SPEAKER'S BIO:
Montana is a fishery scientist at Fisheries Queensland developing population models for stock assessments. She graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Applied Maths seeking to apply her interest in dynamic systems, but quickly realised the key to working with data was a strong statistics foundation. She returned to UQ to focus on developing those necessary skills and then swiftly fell into her current role.
