Templates, Template Overrides & The Month in Joomla!

Well that went faster than normal!

As you're all no doubt aware our next meetup is only a week away.

Since our last meetup the Joomla! world has been busy to say the least we have seen the release of the first alpha of Joomla! 3.0, a call for sponsors & speakers for Sydney Joomla! Day in October (http://sydney.joomladay.org.au/images/SJD12_executive_summary.pdf) and the announcement of the Melbourne Joomla! Day in January 2013 (http://melbourne.joomladay.org.au).

Is my imagination or are things really starting to heat in the Australian Joomla! scene?

Last month's talk seems to have gone down very well and thanks for all the great feedback. Our resident videographer extraordinaire Andrew (https://www.meetup.com/Brisbane-Joomla-Users-Group/members/8511140/) has done a great job of turning it into a very watchable video called "Securing Joomla (https://vimeo.com/46561574)" on the Joomla! Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/channels/joomlavideos) channel he maintains - handy if you need a refresher.

The Night

So, we had 16 people respond to our Poll and it seems that MeetUp polls aren't exactly in a friendly or useful format... hence the question on the RSVP for the upcoming meetup. The top three subjects appear to be:

Templates - Custom, 3rd Party etc Joomla! Web Site Performance Popular Extensions Overview Equal fourth place went to “Template & Language Overrides” and “Joomla! Security - In Depth” - interesting result I thought.

We could spend days on all of these so this month we'll tackle templates - in an effort to get everyone grounded I'll combine 1 and equal fourth i.e. "Template Overrides"

The talk outline covers a fair bit of ground including:

how templates work advantages and issues of 3rd Party templates modifying templates how to use template overrides for a component The Venue

The Pineapple Hotel (http://pineapplehotel.com.au/) has been a great supporter of the Joomla! Users Group and continues to provide the room for $0, that's right free. It also has a great menu that many of us have partaken, so you can come along, have something to eat, drink a beer or two and learn about Joomla!, how to use it, how to extend it and much much more!

The Schedule
The schedule for the meetup will hopefully follow this plan:-
6.00pm - Arrive and chat with other members - order any drinks/food
6.45pm - This months presentation/discussion
8.00pm - Official finish
