Open Knowledge Human Genomics Meetup II
Details
From a patient’s perspective, having a genetic test generally means letting a pathologist draw your blood or swab your cheek, signing a form and setting a date to await the results. But a lot more goes on behind the scenes. The process of DNA sequencing, identifying meaningful variants and interpreting likely outcomes combines biology, high-performance computing and rigorous statistical analysis to eventually help patients understand their disease risks, inform treatment options and potentially save lives.
Speaker
Professor Ingrid Winship (http://www.humanvariomeproject.org/isac-members/ingrid-winship.html) is the Chair of Adult Clinical Genetics at the University of Melbourne and the Executive Director of Research for Melbourne Health. She has a wealth of academic and clinical experience in the field of clinical genetics and speaks extensively on topics around clinical genomics and how researchers are using genetics to save lives (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om-JZWXEwUI). Prof. Winship holds numerous advisory and board positions including at the Human Variome Project, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.
This meetup is co-hosted by the Human Variome Project (http://www.humanvariomeproject.org/)
