Advanced English and Critical Thinking

Online event

Welcome to the new "English and Critical Thinking" group...!!
It runs MONDAY evenings, 5pm till 8pm, weekly.

(NOTE: DO NOT RSVP via Meetup - Do not use this function! Message me - see info below.)

The course is FREE! BUT - we have to pay for rent, Meetup fees, and Zoom costs. My labour is free. So I’m requesting everyone to put $5 in the ‘hat’ each time - still not bad for 3 hours of English practice/learning...

We will read articles, watch videos, listen to podcasts etc and learn deep, socially critical thinking though English discussion, reading, listening and writing. I will use and point you to some of the better-quality media and information sources. Its focus will be on Australian issues and culture, but also global as well. It will involve the learning of local and international history, culture, philosophy etc... so it will be practice of English at a reasonably high level, but with a lot of language support and explanation where necessary.

It will be real, 'educated' English for real purposes! (the analysis of current issues, and the topics mentioned above). The 'real purpose' thing is important - key research has shown that we learn languages best when, paradoxically, we are not focussed on the language itself, but using it for a real and meaningful task (see almost all of Steve Krashen's work in the 1980s).

It will be Mondays, 5pm to 8pm. Best to come face to face, to Room 5, Level 1, 9a Hindley St Adelaide.

You must notify me NOW if you want to be in the class, and wait for my confirmation, because we have a strict limit of numbers in the room due to COVID regulations. The first people who indicate they want face to face will get priority to be there in person; others will need to Zoom. The Zoom invitation is below this message.

So email me at [masked] or message me via FB Messenger or[masked].

You must email or MESSAGE me somehow, and get a response, before you are ‘enrolled’ and can come along. Once enrolled, you do not have to message me each time - just the once.

If you like, for the moment, you can CHOOSE to use Zoom to join. I will record sessions too, and send you the link via email, so you don't have to be there real-time, either. But you will need to let me know if this is what you want. It will be up to you. Personally, I think we all get more from being face to face, but the current SA COVID restrictions of 3 person per 4 m2 limit the numbers.

If you are not sure about coming along/joining in with the new format, the usual principle applies: try a session or a few, and decide - no problems/obligation - entirely up to you 🙂 .But you MUST let me know you are coming - no surprise “rock-ups”...

FIRST SESSION - we will start by looking at Critical Thinking - what it is, and what it’s not. This is a good article by a local Professor at Flinders Uni, Prof. Mary Heath, who is also active in social movements - not just a thinker! It’s fairly readable, because a lot of it is quite autobiographical and personal.
For the first session, we’ll start gently! We will just read it together and stop and personally reflect and question/discuss at key moments. PLEASE HAVE YOUR OWN COPY - EITHER ELECTRONIC, OR PRINTED, AVAILABLE TO YOU. THERE WILL BE NONE AVAILABLE IN THE SESSION.

Here it is:

For SUBSEQUENT meetings, you’ll often need to read articles or parts of articles IN ADVANCE - IT WILL BE ASSUMED THAT YOU HAVE READ THE MATERIAL. PLEASE OBSERVE THIS SO THAT WE CAN MOVE MORE QUICKLY AND COVER MORE GROUND. THERE IS A UNIVERSE TO DISCOVER...!! 🙂

Looking forward to working with you...!!
Cheers
John
