September Book Club - Pachinko & Big Issue Fiction Edition 2018
Hello Book lovers, We selected our books for the August 2018 meeting. The Around Fitzroy & Collingwood Book Club is very informal; there is no set meeting agenda. Over a coffee, beer or wine, we usually have a chat about what everyone thought of the books of the month and see if anyone has read anything else exciting or heard of any great literary events on in Melbourne. Look for the table with the pile of books on it, and that's us. "Pachinko" by Min Jin Lee A victorian epic transplanted to Japan, following a Korean family of immigrants through eight decades and four generations. A club-footed, cleft-lipped man marries a fifteen-year-old girl. The couple have one child, their beloved daughter Sunja. When Sunja falls pregnant by a married yakuza, the family face ruin. But then a Christian minister offers a chance of salvation: a new life in Japan as his wife. Following a man she barely knows to a hostile country where she has no friends and no home, Sunja’s salvation is just the beginning of her story. "Big Issue Fiction Edition 2018" by various contributors This exciting bumper edition, returning for its 14th year, will feature work from some of Australia's most-loved writers, as well as a collection of open submissions. Previous editions have featured work from writers like John Marsden, Matthew Reilly, Jane Harper, Christos Tsiolkas, Graeme Simsion, Maxine Beneba Clarke and AS Patric – to name a few.

    What we're about

We meet monthly to discuss the book or books of the month. As the name suggests, the meetings will be around the Fitzroy - Collingwood area, somewhere we can enjoy a beer, wine or coffee too! No limits on genre, if the book is good we'll give it a go. We have a pretty good mix of people so usually lots of interesting discussion and opinions but nothing too serious. You can always get a few recommendations for a new book or two! A book club is a great way to meet new people if you are new in town, or looking to increase your social circle. It's low pressure - low risk environment and there's always your thoughts on the book to start the conversation flowing!
