The perfect location for a photography workshop is Acadia National Park in Maine. Acadia is a special place, the unique rocky shore, Cadillac Mountain, pristine ponds, old buggy trails and beauty everywhere you look. It is a favorite place for photographers and tourists, so we’ll go before the summer crowds arrive.

Join professional photographer Loren Fisher and explore the rocky coastlines, marsh grasses, harbors and the incredible town of Bar Harbor. You'll be transported during the workshop in Loren's 12-passenger Sprinter van or you can drive yourself.

We’ll start the photography workshop at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 3, and and finish after a morning shoot on Monday, June 7. The beauty of Acadia is sunrise (the top of Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the U.S. you can see the sunrise) so we will be getting out early to catch the best light of the day. The sun will rise around 5:00 a.m., so the days will be starting early. And since we also want to catch the beautiful light at the end of day (sunset is about 8:00 p.m.), we’ll take a long break around noon each day to catch our breath. We’ll be exhausted but exhilarated by the end of the week!

During the photo workshop, I’m putting a special focus on making sure you get the most out of your wide-angle lens. Most people don’t use their wide lens to get the most creative shots they can, the real purpose of a wide-angle is for much more than just getting more area into the shot. You’ll learn how it can add depth and emphasis to your photos that will make your images pop and you’ll get more “wow” from your viewers.

I’ll also be helping you determine what is the best angle for your shots, how some simple but seldom considered composition techniques will enhance your photos and how to get the most from each of the gorgeous scenes we will be visiting. I keep the group small, so we can work other areas where you think your photography needs improving. We’ll spend some time in the “classroom” but I’m a believer in learning by doing, so we’ll be out in the field as I work with you as you’re making pictures. As a follow-up to the workshop, you’ll be able to submit photos to me and I’ll give you tips to help with your future shooting.

Who should Attend:
This workshop is geared for all photographers. Most of our shooting locations will be just beyond the parking lot but several will involve some rock scrambling. Hiking boots are recommended as the terrain is rocky and uneven.

Regular registration $1700. Early registration by Feb. 1 is $1500. Former participants in one of Loren’s workshops: $1400. Registration fee does not include food or lodging.

Photoshop is the ultimate image editing tool and is a complex beast. Learning it is intimidating and can be frustrating due to its extreme power. But most photographers don't need to know everything Photoshop does. There are several tools that are extremely beneficial, a few things that wouldn't be bad to know but aren't essential and then there is a ton of stuff that few photographers really need but graphic designers would use.

This workshop is for photographers, showing you some of the things you can use to improve the look of your photos. This four hour workshop is not all comprehensive, there are some tools and techniques we won't cover but I feel those things are for advanced users. This workshop is designed to take the fear out of Photoshop and help you get going with the software. I will show you things you can't do in Lightroom or can do much better in Photoshop. We won't be dealing with many things that can be done in Lightroom, like Camera RAW, basic developing, cropping, color balance and organization. I've been using Photoshop for at least 25 years and I still have little floppy discs of Version 2! I'll show you many of the tools, techniques and tips that I have picked up over the years.

This is an online workshop, you'll be able to ask questions and see my computer screen. I use a paid Zoom service for my online classes to assure you have easy access and get quality sound and video. Login instructions will be sent after you register. The session will be recorded and you'll be able to watch the video again as much as you like.

Join professional photographer Loren Fisher, as we get away from city lights and explore photographing at night, astrophotography and light painting. We’ll go to remote Vermont locations that offer tremendous views of the sky. I have mastered the technique of light painting: using flashlights to illuminate large objects in the dark. The combination of stars and light painting make for incredible images.

Even if you have never photographed at night, this is will be an exciting exploration of your capabilities, it is much easier than it seems, if you follow the proper steps.

Photos of the night sky can be pretty boring if there isn’t something in the foreground. We’ll make traditional shots with silhouettes but we’ll go beyond that and do light painting to illuminate large foreground objects. I’ll have different flashlights we will use including my big one that can light things up from more than a ¼ mile away.

I’ll show you how to find the Milky Way’s galactic center – the brightest and most colorful section.

One of the trickier things about night photography is focusing your camera, I’ll show you some great methods to make sure you are in focus. We’ll delve into long exposure noise reduction and when it should and shouldn’t be used. You’ll learn how the focal length of your lens affects how long you can leave the shutter open without seeing movement in the stars. We will photograph star trails using multiple exposures and learn how to put them together in Photoshop and the StarStax program.

If we happen to hit a cloudy night, we will still make some fun and exciting photos by doing creative light painting of Vermontish things like a covered bridge, a cemetery, a barn or a pond.

You don’t need a lot of specialized equipment for photographing the stars but you need a camera that makes clean images with ISO higher than 2000. A wide and fast lens is needed, I use a 16-35mm f/2.8 zoom on a full size sensor camera. If you are using a crop sensor, you want at least a 12mm lens or wider. F/2.8 is important, you can get away with f/3.5 but any slower and you won’t be happy with your results. If you don’t have a fast wide angle lens this might be a good time to rent one. You’ll need a sturdy tripod and a remote shutter release, I recommend a wired one. Wireless work but you better have spare batteries! An intervalometer is needed to shoot star trails. Many newer cameras have one built in, but if yours doesn’t, you’ll want to pick one up, it can also serve as your remote shutter release.

We will be based at my art gallery in Woodstock, VT, a quaint New England village named by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the most beautiful towns in America.

We won’t be doing much hiking or walking, you’ll be pretty close to the car the whole time. I recommend wearing hiking boots since we will be out in fields, around ponds and in rough ground in the dark. You’ll receive more clothing suggestions after you register.

Since we will be out late, I won’t have any planned activities during the day but I’ll give you an extensive list of great sites to visit for other photo opportunities.

Local transportation is included in Loren’s 12 passenger Sprinter van. Or you can drive your own car.

A fall foliage photography workshop and tour in Vermont's back roads with a professional photographer who knows the best locations should be on every photographer's bucket list. The stunning fall foliage is a visual feast for photographers and professional photographer Loren Fisher will take you on a classic Vermont experience designed to improve your photography skills while photographing the beauty of Autumn in New England.

Based from his art gallery in Woodstock, VT, Loren will take you on an exciting Vermont photo experience in one of the most breathtaking fall foliage destinations in New England.

Local transportation during the workshop is included in Loren's nice Sprinter 12 passenger van or you can drive yourself. We'll be practicing physical distancing and wearing masks when needed.

Loren will give you personal attention and show you how to take your photography to a higher level, whether you are a beginner or experienced photographer. We will meet for classroom instruction in Loren's art gallery in the heart of Woodstock and then spend most of the time shooting in the field at unique locations. A highlight is photographing a colorful island while Loren light paints it with a large flashlight. Loren will help you set up your camera and tell you the exposures as the darkness rolls in. It is a stunning, unique photo opportunity.

You will visit and photograph beautiful farms, a classic Vermont village and a private 600 acre homestead with ponds, flora and an amazing mountain-top view. We will photograph covered bridges, breathtaking scenery, lakes, waterfalls and enjoy true small-town hospitality.

Loren will share with you his thought process, how he plans a shot and how he edits. The schedule will be flexible so we will shoot in the best locations at the right times.

Equipment needed: A digital SLR camera (and your owner's manual if you don’t know what all the buttons do) and a sturdy tripod. Optional equipment: remote release cable for your camera; polarizing filter; rain protection (you never know), hiking boots (we won’t be doing any serious hiking but we will be on short trails and in fields that may be uneven or wet.)
