What we’re about
If you have any Covid or flu symptoms please do not join the ride. Also, please be aware that many of our Ride Leaders and members are in the vulnerable age groups.
NO SHOW and FREQUENT CANCELLER POLICY. If you consistently do not turn up for a ride, or are cancelling very late or often with no reason, you could be bumped from future rides or dropped from our meetup group. This applies if you have done this more than twice.
Please be considerate to others. We are frequently over-subscribed for rides with waitlists. If you don't think you can make a ride, please cancel during the week well before the event to give someone else a chance to ride.
Bike Leichhardt is a community group which runs regular bike rides and seeks better cycling facilities in and around the Leichhardt area in Inner West Sydney. We also organize weekend and multi-day tours around NSW and beyond.

We cater for all fitness levels and interests with rides ranging from 20-30 km for beginners to longer and more challenging rides of 50-100 km, to a variety of destinations. Something for everyone! The first Sunday of each month is generally an Easy Ride and is suitable for beginners or those returning to cycling after a break.
All our rides are free, however we kindly request that, if you like riding with us, you become a Paid-Up/Financial Member after a couple of rides with Bike Leichhardt.

- Casino-Bentley-return, hopefully on new rail trail or other routeCasino Station, Casino
This is the first of several separate rides for the Northern Rivers visit. Please RSVP for each ride you wish to participate in.
Following is the first ride option.
NB Hopefully the new rail trail will be available for use - but if not, see alternative route at the foot of this description.
New Casino to Bentley section of the Northern Rivers rail trail (NRRT) 13.5 klm leg. Ride out & back (~27 klm). Start 8.30 am from trail head near Casino railway station. Lead by Tim Coen. Not much at Bentley (I believe) so pack plenty of water, sun block and snacks.
Casino is approx 8 hours drive from Sydney - alternatively the Brisbane XPT stops at Casino but beware the need to box up your bike & book it in as if going on an international flight (Check NSW TrainLink for full details). After the ride (& lunch in Casino - tbc) drive to your accommodation for the next few days. NB Murwillumbah is ~ 90 mins drive north or 5 hours by bike from Bentley (hilly at times).
ALTERNATIVELY - if RT is NOT available, then the following is the substitute route
This route will be mainly on sealed country roads with minimal aprons. Riders should be comfortable with passing traffic. Traffic volumes are expected to be low, but could be fast. Also a bit of climbing. We will regroup along the way as required. Bring plenty of water as facilities are few & far between. Starting at Casino station we will go through Casino to Spring Grove Rd, Naughtons Gap Rd, left onto Manifold Rd to Bentley, right onto Bentley Rd, right into Naughtons Gap Rd, left into Rambaldinis Rd which then becomes Gores Rd. Some unsealed but good surface. Right into Spring Grove Rd & thru Casino back to the station.
Another thought! Omit this Casino ride and journey directly to Murwillumbah or wherever you are staying for the next few days of riding on the Murwillumbah (northern) section of the Northern Rivers rail trail.
All the usual stuff applies -- bring a bike in good order & a helmet, spare tube and tools & pump in case of flats. You'll need good LIGHTS for the tunnel and evening ride planned for the following days at Murwillumbah.
Don't forget to book your accommodation soon.
NB there is no GPX but the RT is the old rail route so should be quite civilised. See attached GOOGLE MAPS route & description for the alternative route. NB free to Bike Leichhardt members.

- Murwillumbah loop via Mooball National Park & rail trailNeeds location
39 klms (~ 3 hours plus stops) Depart 8.00 am from Murwillumbah station then head north via Condong looping east then south. Go through back streets and some light industrial then residential areas through hills and into the Mooball National Park. Join the rail trail at Burringbar for the easy ride back to Murwillumbah. 4 notable hills – 236m after 18 klms, further 35 m up at 20 klms, further 50 m at 22 klms, a gentle 100m hill on the rail trail at 34 klms. Plenty of other undulations.(NB To be decided on the day - could add a further 12 klms/1hr by turning south at Burringbar & going to the end of the rail trail thru 2 tunnels to Mooball (stop at the pub?) and Crabbes Creek & then return).
Route without tunnels is 20 klm on road riding/19 klm pathway. Some roads could be busy. Most will be low speed, narrow roads through hilly country mainly servicing residences. This is a regular route for local cyclists.
Not a lot of services along the way till Burringbar so bring plenty of water, etc. You definitely need GOOD LIGHTS for the tunnels. All the usual stuff - bring & wear a helmet, spare tyre tube, tools & pump. Sun block and a sense of humour. If feeling unwell before the ride please don't join the ride.
(NB there is another option of a longer 75 klm ride that takes you from the rail trail, across to the coast and back into Murwillumbah across country via back roads. About 5.5 hours plus stops. We can discuss that closer to the day.)
