Session: SE7EN Deadly Sins of Database Design – Part 1 – Ami Levin (90 Minutes, Hebrew)
Christian teachings speak of the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth. The older among you may remember the amazing (and disturbing) psychological thriller film from 1995, "SE7EN", directed by David Fincher, with Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey. Those of you who never watched it, go watch it now.
Like any aspect of life, the same human vices come into play in database design as well. In this case, the one who deserves to die is the database itself, not the designer.
In this meeting, we will see the 7 most common errors in database design and implementation. We’ll explore their origins, understand why they are so wrong, and how they got rooted so deep, that some even consider them "best practices".
We’ll see practical examples of how they impact data consistency, code convolution, query performance, challenges in modularity, and eventually – why they must die. By that, I mean how to uproot them and the alternatives that exist right in front of your eyes.
By the way, I promise you that each one of you has at least 4 of these in the database you’re currently working on. I invite you to join this meeting and prove me wrong.
