What we're about

Ecstatic Dance is a conscious movement practice that invites people to drop out of their minds and into their bodies to unwind and open to inner wisdom. Dance, Music and Cacao Medicine are the center point of these ceremonies catalyzing ecstatic states, where conscious mind limitations dissolve, opening the doors to the vast subconscious intelligence. It is an opportunity to connect deeply with self and others in fun ways words cannot express. A gracious experience to meet yourself as you are and open a space where you can see beyond who you think you are... It’s about you, freedom, joy and honesty.

This journey will offer a space to develop self-awareness, be moved by deep emotions, expand your intuitive awareness and align your actions with your intentions.

Dancing in the Dark Windsor

Windsor Presbyterian Church

$10.00

Finally, a workout to look forward to instead of dreading. Say goodbye to the pain of dragging your feet to the gym and let the music move your body to your favourite groove. One hour to dance on your own and purely for yourself - your body will thank you for it! When the lights are out you are free to be yourself without worrying about the outside world. WHAT IS DANCING IN THE DARK? DITD is a bi-weekly lights-off chance to dance in the dark for the pure joy of dancing. We turn the lights off and the music on for one hour so that you can move to the beat without the judgement of others (or yourself!) It happens in West End (128 Boundary St) on a Tuesday night and in Windsor (58 Maygar Street) on a Thursday night from 7:00-8:00 PM. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC IS IT? We aim for a little bit of everything. From swing, to dance, to world, to pop, to folk, to rock, to hip-hop, to soul, to super cheesy top 40. We like dance floor classics, and we like weird things we've never heard before. You'll hate some of it, but you'll love a lot of it. And you can always sit out for a song or shrug on the spot if anything doesn't take your fancy - it's not like anyone will see you! Here is a sample: https://www.mixcloud.com/dancingfire/dancin-int-the-dark-brisbane-12052016-make-the-world-dance/ HOW DARK IS IT? It's light enough so that you can see the silhouettes of people around you but dark enough so that you can't make out their features. We aim for a sweet spot between creating a foolproof judgment-free space, and safety! When you first walk in, it will seem really dark, but if you wait a few minutes, you'll find your eyes will adjust and you can find a spot in the room to groove. IT SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE CREEPY. IS IT CREEPY? Nope. Dancing in the Dark is a drug, alcohol and douche bag free zone. While it is dark, people dance independently and there isn't any direct physical interaction between people except those who might know each other. DO PEOPLE GO ON THEIR OWN? It's about half/half. Regardless, most everyone finds room on the dance floor to dance independently. Attending alone is totally normal, welcome and even encouraged! SO WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? Whatever makes you feel comfortable to dance in - sweatpants, bike shorts, your office attire, or a one-piece full-sequined leotard. The only rule is that you do need to wear clothes. DO PEOPLE TALK? Here and there. But not really - the music is loud and people are there to dance, so the most verbal activity that happens is the whooping and cheering while dancing. WHY WOULD I GO IF I'M NOT A SHY DANCER? Because the darkness creates a certain kind of magic that forces you to forget about what you or the people around you look like so that your brain can shut off and your body can move with the beat. Stay for a session and we guarantee by the end you'll be in a dancing zone that you've never been before - or your money back! IS IT A BIT OF SCENE? WHO GOES TO THIS THING? Nope! Sure, the bell curve probably straddles 30-somethings, but there's generally a good mix of ages, genders, bodies, backgrounds, and dance styles smile emoticon We've had four-year-olds and over 65-year-olds, and everything in between. The beauty of the dark is that it doesn't really matter. If you want to be there, then you belong! WHAT IF I HATE IT? You won't. But if it turns out that it's not your thing, no worries at all, you're welcome to leave at any point and no one will notice anyway! WHAT IF I LOVE IT? Then you can come every week, for the rest of your life. GUIDELINES: Bring a bottle of water, dress to sweat. Phones and bright smartwatches are disturbing the atmosphere, please leave them in your car or keep them in your pocket. * $10 at the door (up to 30% discounts available for multiple sessions) * Parking available around the venue Our participants RSVP on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/250921478843223 Enjoy the Dance!

Ecstatic Dance - Blindfold Trance

West End Uniting Church

$20.00

Ecstatic Dance is a conscious movement practice that invites people to drop out of their minds and into their bodies to unwind and open to inner wisdom. Dance, Music and Cacao Medicine are the center point of these ceremonies catalyzing ecstatic states, where conscious mind limitations dissolve, opening the doors to the vast subconscious intelligence. It is an opportunity to connect deeply with self and others in fun ways words cannot express. A gracious experience to meet yourself as you are and open a space where you can see beyond who you think you are... It’s about you, freedom, joy and honesty. What kind of music is played? And what do we do? We play music that encourages movement. Our sonic journey is a fusion of world music, electronica, dubstep, tribal house, classic remixes and more! In this space, all are welcomed into radical self-expression and acceptance. Do yoga, stretch, dance like no one is watching, or just chill and enjoy the music. BLINDFOLD TRANCE We close our eyes when we sleep, but also when we cry, when we imagine things or when we kiss... because the most beautiful things in the world are inside of us - in our feelings. These feelings are a mixture of sunshine and rain, teardrops and laughter, pleasure and pain. The Music is always present inside, along with your feelings, either happy or sad. There is a melody for every moment in life. Music is a gift that lifts you up when you are down and calms your soul when it's all too much. Music can take you anywhere in the Universe. It's all about listening close enough and letting the melody take you where you need to go. Let the rhythm support your steps towards the new reality you create for yourself - the world you want to live in. - 6:30 PM - Doors Open - 7:00 pm - Opening circle – it’s a chance for you to get to know who is in the room and if you want to share a bit about yourself. If you don’t feel like talking, just pass the feather. - 7:30 pm – We will put on the blindfolds and the music will start with trance-inducing beats. The rhythms will progressively go deeper and more layered to support the inner journey. Once the room starts to move and the rhythm accelerates, a gong will mark the move towards the second part of the dance. You can either remove your blindfold and dance with more energy or continue to dance with the blindfold on with less outside expression and journeying more inside. The rhythms will slow down to conclude with a smooth landing back to stillness at the end. - 9:20 pm - Music stops and we have a wind-down meditative moment. Depending on the event – there will be Singing bowls, Didgeridoo, Flute or other traditional acoustic instruments to help in this process. - 9:30 pm – Closing circle – we clap together three times and the fourth time back to the earth to close. - 9:35 pm – Non-verbal time is over - have a chat with the people you shared the space with during the dance. - Occasionally we have a Kava ceremony or Hot Tea during the cold months and hang out for some time. Arrive and leave whenever you want but be mindful not to disturb the other participants. Ecstatic Dance Agreements This is a Free-form Movement Temple To maintain the ultimate freedom we agree to the following: 1. No talking on the Dancefloor (or at the Altar). 2. No street shoes on the dancefloor. No showing up drunk or drugged, no pictures, video, or wearing of scent (please be clean). 3. Respect the Space - Others' Space and the Collective Space. It is an opportunity to connect deeply with self and others in fun ways words cannot express. This journey will offer a space to develop self-awareness, be moved by deep emotions, expand your intuitive awareness and align your actions with your intentions. Contact Improvisation: We are demonstrating and teaching basic contact improv techniques designed to enhance non-verbal communication and build trust in the group. They are simple to follow and do not require experience. The purpose of these methods is to create a safe and cohesive environment to reach a state of relaxed awareness in your body. The ecstatic dance practice is about learning how to reach that state on your own. Knowing how to do this will help you in reprogramming your subconscious behaviors outside the class environment. What kind of music is played? And what do we do? We play music that encourages movement. Our sonic journey is a fusion of world music, electronica, dubstep, tribal house, classic remixes and more!
