What we’re about
The idea for this meetup was inspired by William Heinrich, the sociologist who walked every block of New York City's 5 boroughs.
Once a week, we'll explore a new neighborhood in Tucson. All walks will be approximately 2 hours, and should cover about 4 miles, which is about 8000 steps for most people. Walks will normally start and end somewhere within reasonable distance of restaurant or coffee shop so folks who want to come early or stay late will be able to do so.
The goal is to explore neighborhoods you might never normally set foot in. And yes, it may mean driving a little ways to get to where we are walking, so the idea is Exploration more than Exercise, although ideally it will accomplish both.

Sam Hughes neighborhood walk 3 PM
Borderlands Brewing Sam Hughes, 2500 E 6th St, Tucson, AZ, USSam Hughes was a Tucson merchant who arrived here in the 1860s. Hughes helped incorporate the City of Tucson and he assisted in establishing public education here. Sam Hughes Elementary School was named after Hughes first, later the neighborhood adopted the name too.
The Sam Hughes neighborhood is bounded by Speedway, Broadway, Campbell, and Country Club. It is just east of University of Arizona. Note that Sam Hughes is buried in one of the cemeteries on Oracle Rd.
Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1920s through the 1950s. The architectural styles in the neighborhood are very eclectic, varying from California Bungalow to Pueblo Revival to Mission Revival to Craftsman styles. Many homes in the neighborhood were designed by Josias Joesler, Tucson’s most celebrated and well-known architect. The houses are all really interesting and many have artistic touches like the house which has a London phone booth in the front yard.
We'll meet at Borderlands Brewing company on the southeast corner of 6th and Tucson Boulevard and we can wander back there after the walk. They have a good menu and even have karaoke several nights a week.27 attendees
