Fellow gophers,

Finally, we've decided to organize a meetup for this month.

The December meetup is powered by Verse, who has kindly offered their space more than once for this meetup.

About Verse: "Verse is a venture-funded startup headquartered in Barcelona. We’re a global payments technology platform: our beautiful product lets people pay each other back instantly. And it’s working, people love sending money with Verse and we’re evolving the way the world pays."

So there will be one talk, maybe a second short one (not sure yet) and then some discussions around https://adventofcode.com solutions in Go.

The first talk will be "Learning to count at scale in Golang " by Jordi Montes @positiveblue2. A really interesting topic with the following abstract:

"As engineers, we already know that simple tasks become harder at scale. A category of problems that become slow and resource intensive when we deal with "big data" are the ones related with counting things. In this talk we will discuss some counting related problems like distinct counting (how many different elements do we have in a set/stream) or top-k (elements with the most repetitions in a set/stream)

I will explain how we can solve those problems with probabilistic data structures and algorithms like Bloom/Cuckoo filters (set membership), HyperLogLog and KMV (cardinality estimation) and Count-Min Sketch (top-k most frequent values).
I will also give some intuition of how those algorithms work under the hood and where we can take advantage of them (databases, stream processing engines, microchips, analytic engines...)"

Advent of Code is an Advent calendar of small programming puzzles for a variety of skill sets and skill levels that can be solved in any programming language you like. It became a tradition for many developers around that compete to see who comes up with the most elegant, the fastest, or idiomatic solution.
We will discuss some of the problems that have been proposed this year and walk through some of the solutions in Go for them.
If you are participating in the AOC of this year do not hesitate and contact us to expose your solutions!

Special thanks to Marc Cobos from Verse for letting this happen!

ps. to find the building door you need to cross the Hard Rock building corner, turn left and it's on that little street.
