September Meetup - The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
This month's book was recommended by Jill Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hellish for all the slaves but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood - where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned and, though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted. In Whitehead's ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor - engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar's first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven - but the city's placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. Even worse: Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher, is close on their heels. Forced to flee again, Cora embarks on a harrowing flight, state by state, seeking true freedom.

What we're about

I started this book club at the beginning of 2011 as I couldn't find a book group in the Western suburbs that interested me.

The group meets on the last Monday of every month. We decide on books every 6 months or so by each members putting forward books. Meetings are held around the Footscray, Yarraville or Williamstown area and we are meet in members homes.

I'm hoping that people in the group will enjoy sharing their love of reading and meet others at the same time.

I'm always open to feedback on how the club runs and any suggestions for the future. If you go to the "pages" tab there is more information about the bookclub and how it's run.

May all your books be great books!

Note: Members who have not been to the site for over four months will be removed. The reason for this is to have the community reflect those who are active in the book club which is particularly important when we often have a waitlist for new members. New members who join and don't attend a meetup for 6 months will be removed. Other members who haven't attended a meetup for a year will also be removed. If you are removed and you would like to rejoin at another time, please feel free but there may be a waitlist.

Members who are No Shows on two occasions with out any follow up will be removed from the group and will be unable to rejoin.
