NOTE DATE CHANGE: In November we'll meet Saturday, 11/22/25, before Thanksgiving weekend.
In November let's read and discuss the graceful classic, Manuel Puig's The Kiss of the Spider Woman. Puig's experimental book was published in 1976 and explores love, politics and personal identity in a repressive South American regime. His work inspired a musical, an Oscar winning film and the recently released movie based on the story. Puig's writing style is characterized by its elegance, dark humor and the use of popular culture to explore the inner lives of his characters, The novel takes place in an Argentine prison where two very unlike men forge an intimate relationship that defies conventional masculine ideals. To make their lives bearable, window-dresser Molina shares the glittering stories of the glamorous and deadly movie star Spider Woman, and the cynical revolutionary Valentin listens. Puig's fascinating and entertaining novel examines the link between political revolution and gay dignity, and the power of narration and fantasy. The Kiss of the Spider Woman is 281 pages long and is available in local libraries and online. We're all busy as the holidays approach -- you're welcome to come add your thoughts after watching the 1985 movie with William Hurt or the recently released film version instead!
