What we're about

The Melbourne Mahjong Meetup Group is dedicated to those who are in Melbourne and would like to play the ancient game of mahjong and meet other players. If you are interested in playing some Cantonese/Japanese Mahjong on a regular basis, then this group is for you :)

There are no restrictions in this group, anyone interested in playing / learning to play are welcome to join.

We've recently been playing several styles of mahjong, including Cantonese, Japanese, Taiwanese, and World Series of Mahjong rules.

Upcoming events (4+)

Japanese/Riichi Mahjong (リーチ麻雀) at The Gaming-Verse Box Hill

The Gaming-Verse Box Hill

Join us for some games of (Japanese) Riichi Mahjong at The Gaming-Verse. We welcome beginners and seasoned players alike; let us know ahead of time if you are a beginner. We primarily play Tenhou/Mahjong Soul rules.

Please follow these precautions to keep everyone safe:

  • If you are sick in any way please do not attend,
  • The Gaming-Verse has asked that if you are eating in the store, please sit down and do not be playing a game or next to a game,
  • Before sitting at the table please wash your hands with soapy water in the bathrooms,
  • It is good to use hand sanitiser as well but please allow the sanitiser to completely dry away as it can burn the ink on the mahjong tiles.

The Gaming-Verse prohibits bringing meals into the store, however snacks are fine. It is recommended you eat prior to attending the session. The Gaming-Verse also sells snacks and drinks in the store.

Please change your RSVP to not going if you're no longer able to attend. This will give the next person on the waitlist the opportunity to attend.

I would advise against parking in the lane right outside the store as it is limited paid parking. There is extended hours parking available in the side streets/residential area nearby.

Hong Kong Mahjong at Marché Board Game Cafe

Marche Board Game Cafe

Players of all skill levels are welcome to join us at Marché Board Games Cafe in the CBD for a casual night of mahjong - Right in the CBD. We'll start around 5.30pm till we all need to go home :)

Our typical session concludes usually around 10:00pm.

Please change your RSVP to not going if you're no longer able to attend, 24 hours prior the event.

For those that have a record of non attendance without communicating, you will be moved to the waiting list for future events and be contacted directly to confirm that you indeed intend to turn up, at which you will be allotted a spot subject to availability.

For more details on the rules of the game, please refer to: http://mahjongtime.com/hong-kong-mahjong-rules.html

Marche has been kind enough to offer us a deal to play in their cafe. While you don't have to pay the entry fee, you must at least purchase a drink. Given the hard time most cafes and restaurants have had over the last few months, we recommend you support Marche by buying a meal too. (The food is quite delicious!) By showing your support we can continue to play at Marche.
