What we’re about

This is a hiking group for those who enjoy a little challenge off the beaten path and who also like to take some time to breathe, photograph, or meditate and contemplate the various environments we explore--inner and outer. If you are fit enough for a few miles and some cross-country and some scrambling--singles, friends, or couples-- and like to explore, come and join us!

Y'ant Seen Nothing Yet: The Full Tour of Yant Flat

Silver Reef Road, Leeds, UT, US

    Rating:
6 miles, 1500 feet of climbing. Easy to strenuous. Some steep slanted rock and some rough rocky slopes to negotiate.

This hike is in conjunction with Red Rock Hiking.

    ----

Yant Flat, aka the Candy Cliffs, is a local 600ft high redrock exposure that is approached from a mile back in the woods above the cliffs. After that mile long warmup, you wander among large exposures of red sandstone, down into photogenic bowls, along secret washes, and around sudden corners into yet more eye-popping colored sandstone bowls. It's great.

Be aware tho that the going does get rough in places, with soft sand, bushes, broken rocks, and rather slantey stone slopes. Complete beginners might want to give this hike a miss.

Most importantly there are many many moderate climbs which add up to a whole lotta climbing. You will need some stamina for the hike!

    ----

The Drive: From the meet at the start of Silver Reef Road it's 14 good graveled miles to the trailhead. Any dirt capable car will do.

For those without dirt capable rides, there is usually plenty of room in other cars. Just ask in the comments and you should find something.

Prep: 2 big bottles of water, sun hat, some food, camera. Leather gloves and a hiking pole are useful, but not strictly required.

    See you there! M+J :)
