What we're about

Whether we be part-time, contract or casual teachers, it will always be true that “teacher quality is the single most important in-school factor influencing student achievement”. As teachers, we have all undertaken an amazing journey of Life Long Learning. Even though Relief Teachers step into a stranger’s class maybe just for one day, I believe that even one day can be just as productive and enjoyable (or even more so), than when their teacher is present.

“A teacher’s effectiveness has a powerful impact on students”

This is a Professional Development group for Relief Teachers to develop their unique skills and abilities, in a friendly and professional group setting. Everything we do here will align to the Professional Standards for Teachers as appropriate. Information for the recording and reporting of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) will follow the guidelines set out by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). This just means that I will provide the standards focus and identified area etc, for you to put into your records.

Recording of CPD will only begin after a few social meetups first. Depending on the interest from members, I may start the PD focus in two months, around the start of March, 2016. The first few meetups would be an opportunity to:

• meet one another

• ask questions

• get a feel for the goal of this meetup

• share ways this team could support your casual teaching needs on a really practical level

• suggest topics for discussion, preferred locations/times to meet and regularity of meetings etc

Relief teacher-specific PD can be difficult to find, so I hope this group will fulfil that need. I hope this to be the beginning of creating a PD workshop ultimately called "Whatta Relief", about which I am very passionate.

It is my dream that this group will:

-> focus on all the various aspects of Relief Teaching in all/most of the Primary Year Levels (eg. motivation, lesson prep, resources, behaviour management etc etc)
-> meet regularly
-> be truly committed to improving our skills, for the benefit of our schools and students in our care
-> strongly focussed on Professional Development
-> be a warm and welcoming place, with a relaxed environment where teachers feel free to share stories of both success and strife
-> grow and learn together

"The greatest resource in Australian schools is our teachers"

Hope to see you at a Meetup soon,
