What we're about
Do you play an instrument? Sort of? Squawkestra is a community orchestra for adults who are beginning to learn or returning to playing music. Squawkestra began with a group of 5 string players in November 2006 and has continued to grow as we collect members along the way from varied backgrounds, experience and interests. The group became a full orchestra under the baton of Andrea Simpson as more people heard about the orchestra and recognized the need for an orchestra catering for adults at a beginner level. The current membership is around 50 players. Katrina Wilson O’Brien is the Artistic Director. Levels of musical experience range from absolute beginners, those returning after many years of hiatus, or players looking for performance experience on their 2nd, (3rd or 4th!) instrument. Rehearsals take place fortnightly at the lovely Northcote Senior Citizen’s Centre at 18A Bent St, Northcote. All orchestra members pay an annual membership fee and we accept new members at all times of the year. The orchestra aims to provide an opportunity to play music at a beginner level to grade 3. Rehearsals are fun and relaxed. There are no auditions to join. Repertoire is mostly classical and includes a varied contemporary repertoire. A bunch of good folks attend each rehearsal and at break times we all enjoy a cuppa, a natter and great home made cakes. The orchestra regularly presents concerts for friendly audiences and enjoys working with a number of guest artists and conductors through out the year. There are also opportunities to make music in chamber ensembles, duets and solos.
