What we're about

The Suncoast Skeptics is a group which values critical thinking and rational, evidence-based decision-making. We are passionate about a wide range of subjects, including philosophy, science, epistemology, social issues, morality, and, obviously, pragmatic skepticism.

Are you someone who has a thick skin and enjoys having your beliefs and biases challenged? Do you have a rational mind and a thirst for learning new things? Do you believe that doubt is valuable, that not knowing all the answers is something which drives us to explore the world? Are you willing to accept convincing evidence over wild speculation? Do you possess a curiosity which keeps you expanding your understanding of yourself and reality? If so, this is the group for you.

Our group members come from many backgrounds and hold a diversity of beliefs on many issues. Most are atheists or non-religious, and we do tend to be liberal / progressive on many issues. Most of us are humanists and wish to reduce the harm we see in the world. But those are not universal or required traits. So long as you bring to the table patience, polite debate, and challenging ideas, you might enjoy joining us!

We meet regularly for Sunday morning brunches, Wednesday dinners, and trivia nights. Many of our meetings are discussions where attendees talk about important issues of the day. Some of the topics we've covered over the years include choosing authorities and sources, gun control, alternative medical treatments, organic crops, space exploration, public education, and the economics of Star Trek, just to name a few.

Through 2017, the Suncoast Skeptics have largely been a social discussion group, but things are in motion to build a new platform within the group. We're adopting explicit Humanistic values and will be looking for ways in which the group can provide service to our Sarasota and Manatee communities through charity works, volunteerism, and educational outreach. If this sounds like something you would like to see move forward, please let us know!

Skeptics Halloween Party

Needs a location

That's right, it's that time of year again: The Annual Skeptics Halloween Party is now scheduled. It will be on Saturday, October 26, 2019. Please note: we have cats and dogs, so if you have allergies, sorry! The dogs will likely be boarded for the night, and the cats will be shut up in a guest room. We'll provide ice, sodas, some liquors and mixers, and water, as well as some food/snacks. Please bring a dish, snacks, or other consumables to share if you would like, as well as anything you like to drink. We have room for coolers, so bring those, too. We will have very limited or no space in refrigerators. We likely won't provide beer since we've often had little consumed by guests, and it goes bad in the fridge too quickly! Costume not required but appreciated. Party is inside downstairs and outside on the lanai. If you arrive for the party, please come inside through the front door (top level close to the street, the door on the right of the two-door entrance will be unlocked) and then an immediate right down the stairs, OR come in through the screened lanai around back (lower level, down the sloped driveway, careful!). You do not need to knock or ring the bell, but be aware that cats might have escaped their prison and might try to scoot out the door as you come in! The address will be emailed to those who have RSPVed a day or two before the party. Our house is near Bee Ridge and Shade, 4 miles from I-75 and 1 mile from US-41/Tamiami Trail. Parking is on the street or in the circular driveway. Please don't park down the sloped driveway, we have a guest coming who will need direct lower-level access, so we are reserving that space. If you also need direct access, please let us know ahead of time so that we can reserve you a spot. Please do not block neighbors' driveways or otherwise block the road when you park. If there is no obvious place to park along the road, you can probably park at the corner of our street and Bee Ridge at one of the office buildings and then walk down (less than a block). The party will start at 6pm and go until everyone has left (typically midnight or so). If you cannot arrive until after 9pm, please call Dave to see if others are still partying!
