🎤Web accessibility: How to begin making improvements when it feels overwhelming
😀Taryn Ewens | @TarynEwens | https://www.taryn.codes
Have you ever worked in a large codebase that has never made accessibility a priority? And while you want to make the web a more inclusive place, you don't know where to begin? I was there and it was incredibly overwhelming. How do you even get started when you have a huge amount of legacy code and accessibility isn't even part of the conversation? It's a cultural change that isn't easy but this talk will share my experiences of my team getting to a point where the whole (opinionated) engineering unit agreed on web accessibility standards.
It will not cover any technical requirements of an accessible website. This talk is about making the cultural change that changes web accessibility from being a background thought to a regular conversation and part of your requirements.
An ex-Pastry Chef turned Front-End Developer, Taryn works on the Design Operations team at Finder, Australia's largest comparison website. Since starting at Finder, web accessibility has gone from being something that was rarely thought about to being a regular conversation based on her and her teams work. Her proudest achievement is getting the whole (passionate) engineering unit to agree on and commit to a set of web accessibility standards. She is passionate about inclusion, accessibility and improving user experiences for all. When she’s not coding, Taryn’s usually found hanging out with her beloved doggo, Lexi the Samoyed.
