What we're about

This is a group for anyone interested in analytics and data science. Our goal is to explore topics on the cutting edge of the data revolution, discuss developments in the Australian market, gain common ground on tools and approaches and get to know who's who in the Sydney data community. We meet fortnightly for breakfast in the CBD.

Hands on Data Science - Fifth Meeting, and GPU Computing!

This is not the regular breakfast meetup… This is a new stream where Data Practitioners can come together, share prepared material on a topic of the group’s choosing, and provide constructive feedback to each other. We welcome novices, but would ask that everybody reads about the topic in advance, so that they can contribute to the discussion. Topic for today’s session: GPU Computing Required Prep: As our focus always leans towards data science applications, please come prepared with examples of where you have used GPU computing in your machine learning projects, and what benefits or issues you have encountered. Agenda: 7:30 am - breakfast and networking. 7:55 - TBC - Intro to Hands on Data Science Format, and today’s topic. 8:05 - Speaker (Corey Ho) - GPU Computing through RAPIDS GPU and Blazing SQL 8:25 - Evaluator (TBC) - Feedback for presentation 8:30 - Lightning Talks - Your commercial case study, and group discussion. 8:55 am - Geoff Pidcock + group - selection of topic/roles for next session, and close. Topic Abstract: What do you do when it takes too long to train your estimator? GPU computing can come to your rescue, where the many computing cores of a graphics processing unit can be used to work on your problems in parallel and finish them much faster. This session is where we can learn from each other’s experience, and compare our favorite approaches.
