Mysticism in a Time of Mixed‑Markets, War, and the Rise of Authoritarianism
Details
Dear friends,
You are warmly invited to our next Adelaide Mystics gathering, where we’ll explore a theme that feels increasingly relevant to many of us:
Mysticism in a Time of Mixed‑Market Capitalism, War, and the Rise of Authoritarianism.
We live in a moment shaped by accelerating markets, global conflict, political polarisation, and a subtle tightening of authoritarian tendencies across the Western world. Many people are feeling the strain — not only politically or economically, but spiritually and emotionally. For those of us who practice a more customised form of spirituality, there are few opportunties to retreat from this mind-created world.
This meetup offers a gentle, grounded space to ask:
- How do we stay spiritually awake in systems that reward speed, fear, and distraction
- How do we protect our inner freedom while participating in modern democratic life
- What can the lineage of mystics teach us about courage, clarity, and subtle resistance
- How do we remain human and connected in a time that often pulls us toward numbness or overwhelm
The meeting will begin with a 20‑minute talk exploring:
- the core tension of being a mystic in contemporary Western life
- the subversive role mystics have played throughout history
- the importance of relational mysticism as a counter‑force to isolation and fear
- practical ways to cultivate inner freedom in a fast, market‑driven, militarised age
After the talk (and perhaps during), we’ll move into a community conversation where we’ll reflect together on:
“What does it mean to stay awake, compassionate, and ethically grounded in a time of uncertainty, war, and rising authoritarianism?”
This will be a spacious, non‑dogmatic dialogue — a chance to listen, share, and explore how we each navigate the world with clarity and dignity.
All are welcome. No belief system is required — just curiosity, openness, and a willingness to be present.
There is no pressure to share — quiet participation is equally welcome.
After the meeting, all are invited to come for lunch at the Excelsior Hotel, walking distance from the location of the Meetup.
*Due to ongoing cost of Meetup Administration and the Centre, a $5.00 donation would be most welcome. Tea and coffee provided.*
Attendees are welcome to join us afterwards for lunch or a drink at the Excelsior Hotel.
