About us
Welcome to Alternative Roots.
We are a brand-new community of progressive families who value curiosity and critical thinking, hoping to support one another in creating diverse experiences, exploring evidence-based perspectives, celebrating inclusivity, and promoting lifelong learning! We aim to provide a safe, affirming space for children and families to collectively work together to plan educational opportunities, secular socialization, skill-sharing and mutual aid, and parenting support grounded in collective values.
We are just getting started, but here are some events that will be included on our calendar this year:
- Art in the Park (Monthly): Artists of all ages are invited to express themselves creatively at this monthly meetup! We will provide a rotating mix of open-ended art materials, sensory play and a variety of prompts!
- Weekly Round-Up (Mondays 9-12; beginning in Autumn of 2026): a weekly, in-home, drop-in style gathering for members to ease into their week with shared activities, connection and play. These gatherings are designed to foster a sense of rhythm and community in a low-pressure environment. Most mornings will include a family circle time, a nourishing snack, free time and some ongoing community projects.
- Book Club: Every other month, we will choose a thought-provoking book book that sparks questions, challenges assumptions and reflects values like justice, empathy and inclusion. Together, older children and their grown-ups can explore diverse perspectives and learn together!
- Parenting Support Circles (Monthly): a gathering of like-minded parents once a month to enjoy a meal together, exchange ideas, talk through challenges, and support one another without judgment.
- Field Trip Fridays: Join us on fun, educational outings throughout the community—museums, parks, cultural spaces, and more!
- Resource Swap (Quarterly): A family resource swap designed to encourage sharing, sustainability, and mutual support. Bring items you no longer need and take what’s useful to you!
We hope you will join us!
